Harold Arthur Burks

Harold Arthur Burks, age 86, of Shelby, died early Friday morning, March 15, 2019 at Winchester Terrace in Mansfield.

Harold was born December 7, 1932 in Wyandot County, Ohio, the son of the late Arthur and Bessie (Courtad) Burks. He was a 1951 graduate of Shelby High School and was a veteran of the United States Armed Forces. After high school, Harold briefly worked at Wilkens Air Force Depot before spending his career at the “Tuby”. He retired from Copperweld after 35 years of service. Harold was a member of the Shelby Moose Lodge and was a former member of the Shelby VFW. He loved to fish and hunt.

Harold is survived by a son: Dr. Duane (Dr. Rose) Burks of Mansfield; a daughter: Dr. Brenda Reeves of Murray, KY; 2 grandchildren: Stephan (Heather) Reeves and Dylan Burks; a great granddaughter: Sophie Reeves; and a sister: Doris (Kenneth) Beck. In addition to his parents, Harold was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 59 years: Alberta Fay (Stewart) Burks on April 19, 2014; 2 sisters: Jean Pfiefer and Betty Russell; and a brother: Vernon Burks.

Family and friends are welcome on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 from 5-7 pm at the Penwell Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where funeral services will immediately follow at 7 pm. Mary Lou Brooke will officiate, and military services conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail will conclude the service. Donald Ray “Don” Godby

Donald Ray “Don” Godby, age 59, of Crestline, died Thursday, March 14, 2019 at Avita Ontario Hospital after a series of short illnesses.

Don was born March 20, 1959 in Shelby, the son of the late William H. and Edna L. (Adams) Godby. He was a 1977 graduate of Shelby High School. Don was an avid bowler and golfer. He loved his fast cars and throughout the years had several different ones including Corvettes and Porsches.

Don is survived by his fiancé, Pam Lynch, and her daughter: Kelsi (Jason) Kitzmiller all of Crestline; 2 sons: Joshua (Emily) Godby of Florida and Jeremy (Ashley) Godby of South Carolina; 8 grandchildren: August, Declan, and Castle Godby, Jackson Godby, Trinity Lynch, Zachary Hopewell, and Gunner and Hudson Kitzmiller; 6 siblings: Dorothy Maynard of WV, Opal Wulderk of FL, Mary (Jim) Kennedy of FL, Jim (Peggy) Godby of FL, Lucy Sigler of CA, and Sylvia (Mike) LeClair of Willard; a sister-in-law: Pat Godby; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by 3 brothers: Bob Godby, Bill Godby, and Tom Godby.

Robert J. Tackett

Robert J. Tackett, age 90, of Plymouth, died Sunday, March 10, 2019 at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Sarasota, Florida.

Bob was born January 11, 1929 in Salyersville, KY, the son of the late John Sherman and Martha (Bailey) Tackett. For 32 years, Bob was a federal government maintenance employee, where he excelled in carpentry, working throughout his career at Wilken’s Air Force Depot in Shelby, NASA Plum Brook Station in Sandusky, and DCSC in Columbus. Bob was an excellent handyman who was never afraid to tackle any project from woodworking to painting or even figuring out how to do something new. He enjoyed planting and caring for his flowers and working in the yard.

Bob and his wife, Anna, wintered in Sarasota for over 25 years. Bob cherished the warm Florida sunshine, playing golf (even until last year), and neighboring with his many friends in the Cedar Cove Community. They also enjoyed playing shuffleboard where he was well known for his shuffling form where his left hand remained in his back pocket.

Bob was a member of the Plymouth Lions Club where he had been awarded Lion of the Year and was a Melvin Jones Fellow recipient, Shelby Masonic Lodge 350 F&AM, and was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church in Salyersville, KY.

Bob, who will always be remembered as a kind and gentle man, is survived by his wife of 72 years, Anna L. (Hicks) Tackett, whom he wed on March 15, 1947; a son: Bobby Tackett of Westerville; a daughter: Patricia (Larry) Laser of Plymouth; grandchildren: Tracie Tackett-Penrod, Ryan (Ann) Tackett, Andrew Tackett, Lana (David) Bell, and Amy (Ken) Shakley; a grandson-in-law: Derek Wyse; great-grandchildren: Brenden & Kiera Wyse, Keller, Madeline & Lenore Penrod, Tyrod Allen,       Ryan & Ava Tackett, Nicholas & Hailey Taylor, Kyle Bell & Adam Bell, and Seth Shakley & Lexie Shakley; a great-great-grandson: Ashton Penrod; a sister-in-law: Ruie Reagan; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by grandchildren: Tami Tackett Wyse & Mason Bell; and 7 brothers & 2 sisters: Luther, Lonnie, Oren, Delmes, Elmes, Dolla, and Earl Tackett, Marie Roark, and Mae Gullett; and a brother-in-law: Bill Reagan.

Family and friends are welcome on Sunday, March 17, 2019 from 2-5 pm at the Penwell Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where a Lions memorial service will be conducted at 5 pm. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 18, 2019 at 10:30 am at the funeral home with Revs. Charles Smith and O. Douglas Tackett officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery in Plymouth. Memorial contributions may be made to the Plymouth Lions Club or the American Heart Association.

Evelyn Mary Barnett

Evelyn Mary Barnett, age 91, currently of Willard but a former longtime Shelby resident, died Monday, March 4, 2019 at The Willows at Willard.

Evelyn was born October 9, 1927 in Nashua, New Hampshire, the daughter of the late Irvin and Doris (Hunt) Hall. She was a 1945 graduate of Nashua High School and attended the New England School of Art. A homemaker the majority of her life, Evelyn had also been employed at Shelby AMF and Rothlisberger Transfer. Known as “Grammie Evie” to her family and friends, she loved spending time with her family; she enjoyed reading, painting, crossword puzzles, and needlework.

Evelyn is survived by her children: Richard W. (Sandra) Barnett of Willard, John E. (Kathy) Barnett of Dayton, Carla A. (David) Viers of Shelby, and Susan (Dale) Wills of Surprise, AZ.; eight grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild; a sister, Natalie Brown of Scottsdale, AZ; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband: Harold Reese Barnett on December 13, 1993; two grandsons: Nicholas and Josh Barnett; and a brother: Richard Hall.

Family and friends are welcome on Saturday, May 11, 2019 from 10-11am at the Penwell Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where funeral services will immediately follow at 11am with Pastor Rich Hose of Windham, Ohio officiating.  Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to be made to Stein Hospice or Salvation Army.

William K. “Bill” Russell

William K. “Bill” Russell, age 70, of Shelby, died Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at the Crestwood Care Center.

Bill was born September 23, 1948 in Troy, Ohio, the son of the late Robert Edward and Thelma (Packman) Russell. He was a 1967 graduate of Troy High School and had been employed as a tool and die maker at Tech Form Industries in Shelby. He was a sprint car mechanic for many years and loved to watch sprint car and NASCAR races. He thoroughly enjoyed watching sports, especially The Ohio State University Buckeyes, the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Cincinnati Bengals, and certainly all his grandchildren in their activities.

Bill is survived by his wife, Sandra Lynn “Sandy” (DeLong) Russell, whom he married on June 7, 1975; 3 children: Scott (Erica) Straker of Crestwood, KY, Beth (Marc) Hartz of Shelby, and Becky Russell (Matt Kroft) of Perrysburg; 9 grandchildren: Alec, Nathan, and Jaret Straker, Zack, Tanner, and Conner Hartz, Whitney Vanderpool, and Kaitlyn and Kearsten Morrison; and 2 sisters: Carla (Tim) Manimtim of Port Clinton and Darla Compton of Troy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 brothers: Earl Allen Russel and Bob Russell.

Albert Renz

Albert Renz, age 87, of Shelby, died early Monday morning, March 4, 2019 at his home.

Albert was born February 4, 1932 in Luck, Poland, the son of the late Eduard and Olga (Renz) Renz.

Albert was truly a hardworking man. In his professional career, he worked at Mansfield Orthopedics for over 30 years and then became a line inspector at the “Tuby” in Shelby. He retired from there (Copperweld) in 1996 after 20 years of service. At both of those jobs, Albert invented and created many different items that are still used and sold today.  He was a self-taught engineer. He could make anything, design anything, and fix anything- all of which he enjoyed doing. He was an all-around handy man and loved being involved in projects, both his own and helping others with anything they needed. He was always happy and genuinely excited to help. Albert was meticulous in all his work because he appreciated and never took for granted what he had.

Albert was the true definition of a gentleman. He had a kindness for all, was always sincerely happy, and held no grudges. As he often said, he “lived a good life” and was proud of all he had accomplished. Albert was an excellent story teller and was someone you could sit and visit with for hours. The family farm was his sanctuary and he spent lots of time there working and caring for it. He also enjoyed mowing grass and making apple cider.

Above all else, Albert will always be remembered and admired for being a loving and caring man and for his devotion to his family, especially his daughter, Diane. He was preceded in death by his wife: Christina (Herman) Renz in 2011; daughters: Lili Renz in 1973 and Diane Renz in 2017; his parents; 4 brothers: Edwin Renz, Arnold Renz, Edmund Renz, and Ewald Renz; and 4 sisters: Hedwig Renz, Hiledegard Renz, Edith Renz, and Erika Renz.

Survivors include his sister: Herta Panknin of Shelby; 2 brothers: Erwin (Wilma) Renz of Mansfield and Horst (YoungAe) Renz of New York; and 2 sisters-in-law: Virginia Renz of Shelby and Rosie Renz of Chicago.

Family and friends are welcome on Saturday, March 9, 2019 from 10-11 am at the Penwell Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where funeral services will immediately follow at 11 am. George F. Cole, Jr.

George F. Cole, Jr., age 90, of Shelby, died Saturday morning, March 2, 2019 at his home.

George was born January 4, 1929 in Crawford County, Ohio, the son of the late Thelma Leora (Melick) and George F. Cole, Sr. He was a 1947 graduate of Tiro High School.  George was a life-long farmer and retired from General Motors in Ontario after 33 years of service. He was a longtime member of the First Lutheran Church in Shelby and the Shelby Lions Club.

Traveling was something George enjoyed very much as he and his late wife, Maxine, went to every World’s Fair across the country, spent over 30 years at Bay Point on Lake Erie camping and boating, and wintered in Florida for 25 years at Sun-N-Fun where he was the chief coffee maker for the “coffee club”. They also were members of the Cloverleaf Western Square-Dancing Club. George was an avid follower of all Shelby Whippet sports and took great pleasure in supporting and watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren in all their activities. George loved to tell stories and always had one to share.

George is survived by 3 children: Gregory (Faye) Cole of Shelby, Leora (Tom) Lantz of Shelby, and Pamela (Karl) Graham of Columbus, Indiana; 7 grandchildren: Jodi (Ed) Rinehart, Phillip Cole, Michael (Natalie) Lantz, Jon Lantz, Johan (Aimee) Graham, Karla (Billy) Fidoe, and Kurt (Briana) Graham; 9 great grandchildren: Hannah and Dietrich Rinehart, Reese Cole, Cody and Casey Lantz, Charlie and Noah Graham, Urijah and Layla Graham; in-laws: Effie Cole of Tiffin, Robert Hoover (Bonnie Slone), David (Garnet) Hoover, Jacque (Judy) Hoover, Margie Hoover all of Shelby. In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Maxine Cole, on September 5, 2016; a sister: Kathleen Vanasdale; and 2 brothers: Marlin Cole and Clinton Cole.

Carol Joy (Schafstall) Pry

Carol Joy (Schafstall) Pry, age 92, of Crestline, died Friday, March 1, 2019 at her home.

She was born December 23, 1926 at the family home in New Washington, the daughter of the late Roy and Marjorie (Nye) Schafstall. Carol was a 1944 graduate of New Washington High School and attended Heidelberg College. She began her working career at the “Tuby” and Shelby Business Forms. She took a job at the Tiro World newspaper where her writing career began. From there she worked for many years as a reporter for the Shelby Daily Globe, from which she retired.

Carol loved genealogy and put her writing skills to work as she penned several family genealogical books. She was very proud to give copies to everyone in the family. When her children were young and throughout their lives, she was behind them in everything they did and was the advisor for the Future Homemakers of America. The fruitcakes she made at Christmastime were a family favorite.

Music was a very important part of Carol’s life. She loved playing the piano. She shared this love of music with her husband, Eldon, and they traveled to different venues performing as a duet.

Carol was an active member of Tiro United Methodist Church where she was the choir director and pianist. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and wrote a book on the church’s history.

Surviving are her children: Dan (Nancy) Pry of Howard, OH, Randy (Jan) Pry of Shelby, Doug (Maria) Pry of Crestline, Kathy (Howard) Bair of Shelby; Daughter-in-law: Sue (Gary) Hill of Ganges; Sister: Justine Caskey of Shelby; 20 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Lewis Eldon Pry in 2016; son: Stephen P. Pry in 1995; and siblings: Arlene Schafstall, Lorna Albright, Iola Kissinger and Anita Baker.

Faye Anne (Ostermyer) Crum

Faye Anne Crum, age 82, of Shelby, died on February 21, 2019.

She was born March 7, 1936 in Chatfield, Ohio, the daughter of the late Edgar “Eck” and Hazel (Buchman) Ostermyer.

Faye graduated from Chatfield High School in 1954.  After her schooling, she worked at the Ostermyer Garage in Chatfield, Chatfield Egg Factory, and then the Chatfield Farmers Equity Exchange before meeting her husband, Don Crum.

Don and Faye married on September 15, 1963.  After marriage, she moved to the family farm located just outside of Tiro.

Faye was an excellent homemaker who enjoyed cooking, baking, and flower gardening.  Her first priority was always caring for her family and supporting the work on the family farm.

She was an active member of her community and an ongoing member of Crouse Memorial Lutheran Church in Tiro, Ohio.

Faye is survived by her husband, Don Crum; a son: Michael Crum of Crestline, Ohio; a daughter: Nancy (Michael) Crum-Cianflone MD of San Diego, California; 2 grandchildren, Lucas and Jenna Cianflone; a sister: Phyllis Eppley of Chatfield, Ohio.  Faye was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Jule Redman.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, February 24, 2019 at 1 pm at Crouse Memorial Lutheran Church, 402 Main Street, Tiro, with Mr. Scott Fishpaw, SAM officiating. Burial will follow in Tiro Oakland Cemetery.

Donald E. “Don” Stevens

Donald E. “Don” Stevens, age 68, of Crestline, died Thursday, February 14, 2019 at Avita Galion Hospital.

Don was born February 19, 1950 in Mansfield to the late Juanita (Eaton) and Donald E. Stevens, Sr.  and was a 1968 graduate of Lexington High School. Don had worked at Mansfield Electrical Supply in Ontario for 18 years prior to working as a maintenance supervisor at Richland Correctional Institute. He was employed at RiCI for 6 years prior to retirement in 2003.

Don was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Crestline and was also a member of the Crestline Eagles. He loved cars- both working on them and racing them. He also thoroughly enjoyed music. He had a passion for collecting albums, having over 10,000, had played bass in a band, and was proud to have attended the original Woodstock music festival.

Don is survived by his wife of nearly 43 years, Vickie L. (Hudson) Stevens, whom he married on April 24, 1976. Also surviving are 2 daughters: Kara Stevens of Mississippi and Elizabeth Lieb (fiancé, Kris Fagg) of Crestline; 3 grandchildren: David A. Lieb, Kayleigh C. Lieb, and Sir Ellihue Blackwell, III; a sister: Pamela “Penny” (Chuck) Miller of Westerville; and a half-sister: Diane Ritter of Mansfield. His parents predecease him.
