Carol Joy (Schafstall) Pry

Carol Joy (Schafstall) Pry, age 92, of Crestline, died Friday, March 1, 2019 at her home.

She was born December 23, 1926 at the family home in New Washington, the daughter of the late Roy and Marjorie (Nye) Schafstall. Carol was a 1944 graduate of New Washington High School and attended Heidelberg College. She began her working career at the “Tuby” and Shelby Business Forms. She took a job at the Tiro World newspaper where her writing career began. From there she worked for many years as a reporter for the Shelby Daily Globe, from which she retired.

Carol loved genealogy and put her writing skills to work as she penned several family genealogical books. She was very proud to give copies to everyone in the family. When her children were young and throughout their lives, she was behind them in everything they did and was the advisor for the Future Homemakers of America. The fruitcakes she made at Christmastime were a family favorite.

Music was a very important part of Carol’s life. She loved playing the piano. She shared this love of music with her husband, Eldon, and they traveled to different venues performing as a duet.

Carol was an active member of Tiro United Methodist Church where she was the choir director and pianist. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and wrote a book on the church’s history.

Surviving are her children: Dan (Nancy) Pry of Howard, OH, Randy (Jan) Pry of Shelby, Doug (Maria) Pry of Crestline, Kathy (Howard) Bair of Shelby; Daughter-in-law: Sue (Gary) Hill of Ganges; Sister: Justine Caskey of Shelby; 20 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Lewis Eldon Pry in 2016; son: Stephen P. Pry in 1995; and siblings: Arlene Schafstall, Lorna Albright, Iola Kissinger and Anita Baker.

Family and friends are welcome on Monday, March 4, 2019 from 4-7 pm at the Penwell Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street Shelby. Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at 10:30 am at the funeral home with Pastor Garland Harvey, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Biddle Cemetery on Remlinger Road, Crestline. Memorial expressions may be made to the Tiro United Methodist Church.

    Aunt Carol was greatly loved and admired. Her middle name fit her well because she always radiated “Joy”. Growing up, I enjoyed going to the farm and have so many fond memories of those childhood days. She was a shining example of a Christian woman and a role model to many, including me.
