Earl Duane “Butch” Baker

Earl Duane “Butch” Baker, age 74, of Plymouth, died Friday, December 9, 2016 at the Crestwood Care Center in Shelby.

Butch was born November 15, 1942 on the family farm in Plymouth to the late Maurice and Margaret Vione (Backensto) Baker. He was a 1961 graduate of Plymouth High School and retired after many years of service from RR Donnelley and Sons in Willard where he was a hand book binder. Butch was a member of the Plymouth American Legion and, although he was not a registered member of several other clubs and organizations, he was often the top salesman for many of their fundraisers. This is just one way that Butch showed that he was always there to help someone in need. For a man who was not raised to attend church and learn the word of God, he most certainly exemplified the biblical principle, “love thy neighbor”. Butch never turned anyone down and, in fact, no one ever had to ask for his help. He was just always there. His grandchildren and great grandchildren were his pride and joy and he loved spending time with them. Butch was an extremely hard worker and enjoyed everything outdoors including hunting and fishing.

On February 11, 1961, Butch married the girl that he had saved a seat on the bus for since second grade, his high school sweetheart, Florence Dorion, and she survives. Also surviving are: 4 children: Duane Scott Baker of Plymouth, Kelly (Jim) Shifferly of Delaware, Shannan (Ken) Jones of Shelby, and Lisa Baker of Plymouth; 8 grandchildren: Adam (Amber) Baker, Kyle (Tami) Baker, Ashley (Jake) Medley, Jordan Baker, Justin Baker, Alexis Jones, Jared Baker, and Nicole Jones; 6 great grandchildren: Bryce, Gavin, Dean, Kyleigh, Reegan, and Presley; 7 brothers and sisters: Dave (Sandy) Baker of Shelby, Donna Kamann of Willard, Betty (Larry) Vredenburgh of Plymouth, Junior (Susan Franklin) Baker of Plymouth, Dixie (John) Hart of Plymouth, Vickie Resendez of Plymouth, and Cindy (Doug) Smith of Shiloh; a sister-in-law: Barb Baker of Shelby; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Baker and a brother-in-law, William “Billy” Kamann.

Family and friends are welcome on Monday, December 12, 2016 from 3-5 and 7-9 pm at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11 am. Fr. Chris Mileski will officiate and burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery in Plymouth. Memorial contributions may be made to OhioHealth Hospice.

I was so sorry to hear of Butch’s passing. Of course, I hadn’t seen Butch for quite of few years but I was just thinking about him last week and was wondering how he was getting along. Since he didn’t have email or electronic connections I didn’t get a chance to correspond as I have with a few of our other classmates. I remember Butch as a good friend who always looked “cool”. Remember he was the DJ with the dance club that met at the old Macks Market building in downtown Plymouth. I and some buddies visited his parent’s pond for some wonderful swimming back when we were going to high school. Sounds like he had a wonderful life and family, sorry we weren’t able to get together over the years.
