On December 9, 2024 the faith of Rev S.T. Adkins became sight when he was welcomed into Heaven by his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. S.T., a sinner (Romans 3:23) saved by grace alone (Romans 6:23), through faith in Christ alone (Romans 10:9-10, 13), lived a dedicated life of faith and service for the Lord. He left this world to be with his Lord at the age of 91.
Born Shirley Thomas Adkins on October 18, 1933 to the late Elwood and Nannie (Ferguson) Adkins in Menifee County, Kentucky, he was known his entire life as S.T. He moved to Ohio at the age of 17 and lived in Shelby his entire life.
S.T. married Betty R. Conley on October 18, 1954. To this union were born four daughters: Brenda (Bernie) Highfield, Linda (Ronald) Neeley, Kathy (Dennis) Robey, and Karen (Michael) Barnett; his grandchildren and great grandchildren: Tina (Bruce), Misty (Jamie), Angela (Dustin), Tom (Jessica), Mark (Maryann), Stacy (Ryan), Ashlee, Todd (Courtney), Bradd (Debra), Lexi (Josh) Kaelyn (Kaleb), Izaiah (Katelynn), Deven (Katlynn), Mason, Bryke, Zac (Jaimy), Prestyn, Nevaeh, Keaton, Madison, Abram, Eliana, Ethan, Alex, Monroe, Griffin, Halia, and Zane. He has three great great grandchildren, Maeleigh, Samuel, and baby Eve on the way.
S.T. is survived by his daughters: Kathy (Dennis) and Karen (Mike); his son-in-law: Bernie (Barb); 2 sisters: Wanda Manning and Phyllis (Larry) Hamons; 3 brothers: Earl (Rose), John (Karen), and Gary (Arlene); and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents: Elwood and Nanny; wife: Betty; daughter and son-in-law: Linda and Ronald; daughter: Brenda; granddaughter: Ashlee Barnett; 4 sisters: Della, Dorothy, Claris, Mary; brother: Robert “Bob”; and twin siblings that died shortly after birth, Darrel and Carol.
S.T. was a prominent leader in the Northern United Baptist Church Association. He provided mentorship to young pastors seeking a life of servitude for Jesus. He enjoyed serving the Lord in many capacities and, as a man that loved working with his hands, he loved the physical labor and accomplishment of building the church. He was known for his signature song, “I’m Working On A Building For My Lord”. He enjoyed music, especially Blue Grass and Southern Gospel, and he was gifted to be able to play the mandolin, guitar, and banjo. He loved singing and over the years traveled to many states with several Southern Gospel groups. He was the Senior Pastor of the Northern United Baptist Church in Tiro, OH for 22 years and also worked in the steel mill industry. For 19 years S.T. broadcasted a church service every Sunday on WCLW Mansfield and also broadcast on WAKR Norwalk, WBCO Bucyrus, and WGGN Castalia. After retirement, he became a traveling evangelist filling the pulpit for pastors and guest speaking. For the last 20 years, Rev S.T. was an active leader and member of the Greenwich Baptist Church with his brother, Pastor Gary Adkins and also found the love of Jesus in the people at the New Beginnings Free Will Baptist Church in Shelby with Pastor Brian Phillips.
In the prime of his ministry S.T. also dedicated his time as a summer youth camp leader realizing the importance of today’s youth. He transported and served the kids at Youth Bible Camp, building relationships and sharing the love of Jesus with them. Many of those relationships still exist today.
S.T. was also a huge sports enthusiast. In his younger years he pitched in the city fast pitch underhand league and successfully pitched many no hitters. He also enjoyed playing in the church softball leagues, watching the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Guardians, and The Ohio State Buckeyes. An avid fisherman, if you had a pole he knew where to go to catch the biggest fish.
S.T.’s call into ministry was a lifelong commitment and one he served with dedication, compassion, and great joy. Preaching the Word of God, sharing God’s plan of salvation and our Hope that comes with being a believer, and preaching about the wonders of what awaits us in Heaven were what he considered his greatest accomplishments. S.T. understood how valuable your soul is when both satan and Jesus fight for it. His desire to share Jesus with those that do not know Him was what motivated his fighting spirit to remain in this life.
One of S.T.’s greatest joys was his family and being a Husband, Dad, Grandpa, and Pappy. His greatest desire was for his family to have a personal relationship with Jesus and to know he will see each one of us in Heaven one day. What a reunion that will be!
If you do not know Jesus please accept this as an invitation to find a church that will share God’s free plan of salvation with you. God loves you deeply. Once you experience the unconditional love that God has for you; nothing else will ever compare.
A message from S.T. to you, “Life is short. Eternity has no end. If I were you, I would do whatever you have to do to keep your soul from going to hell and dying without Jesus.”
S.T.’s family would like to extend our appreciation to the Avita Health Care staff for the wonderful care of our Dad and a special heartfelt thank you to Dr. Luu for treating Dad with the highest respect and regards.

Rosemary J. Sutter, age 77, of Crestline, passed naturally yet unexpectedly, Saturday afternoon, December 7, 2024.
Rosemary was born January 9, 1947 in Shelby to the late Charles Joseph and Joan Theresa (Kellner) Sutter. Beginning at Sacred Heart School, she graduated 8th grade then attended the all-girls boarding school, Villa Maria Academy, in Villa Maria, PA, from where she graduated in 1964. Stories of her time at “The Villa” were frequent throughout her life- this her 60th anniversary of graduation. Following high school, she attended the University of Dayton where she studied history and education. Her educational formation was pivotal as it molded a life full of learning and teaching. Upon her graduation from UD, Rosie took a job with the Library of Congress in Washington, DC.
It was just prior to the 1970-1971 school year that she interviewed with, and was hired by, the Cleveland Metropolitan School District for a position at Patrick Henry Junior High School to teach social studies- which she taught for many years and eventually served as department chair. This era of time teaching in Cleveland certainly left Rosemary with a lifetime of stories about students and school life. Although her working life was in Cleveland where she would be during the week, she would return home as frequently as possible to Bethlehem, Shelby Settlement, especially annually for summer vacations. Her love and passion for helping students succeed resulted in further education at John Carroll University earning her master’s in education with a focus on school counseling/guidance. Rosie’s remaining time in the CMSD was at Nathan Hale Junior High School as a guidance counselor. Her 35+ years of service was always matched with a positive attitude as she thrived in watching students succeed in their education.
After her retirement, Rosie moved home to the Sutter family farm and homestead in the Shelby Settlement. Her time away from students was short lived as she quickly became a guidance counselor at Galion High School for several years. Additionally, Rosie volunteered with the Ohio Reads program where she not only assisted students to improve their reading abilities but took time to learn and know about the students and their families.
Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church- the families, church, and school- were everything to Rosemary. She was a faithful active lifelong member of the church, giving her time to many church functions. These included the church’s annual festival and events, their Altar Rosary Society, collection counting, leading the sunshine committee, and being active with “The Heart of Bethlehem” campaign focusing on the future of Sacred Heart School.
Rosemary’s interest in history, events, and people matched well with her knowledge of all things happening and personalities of the Shelby Settlement- both past and present. And her calendars were marked always with the most important life events and kept for years for records of things that have happened. Rosie could have conversations with any person, of any age, of any background, and on any topic. She truly loved spending time listening to people about their lives and accomplishments- especially those at cherished family reunions.
Her home, the family homestead, was always welcoming to any and all. She loved mowing her yard, keeping it pristine and meticulous. She was an excellent baker and was well known for her homemade strawberry and peach jams- all of which was shared with family and friends. A cup of black coffee often paired well with a good book, the Wallstreet Journal, or a crossword puzzle and cheering on Cleveland sports, especially the Indians, was a constant. Rosie was an excellent gift giver, and a baby was not born, that she had a connection to, who didn’t get a card or gift amongst the thousands of cards she sent to others for all sorts of occasions. She will certainly be remembered by those close to her for her zest for life and truly caring about the people around her.
Rosemary is survived by her nieces: Michelle (Rodney) Blaising of Crestline, Gretchen Sutter (Brian Deehr) of Lexington, and Melinda Sutter of Texas; great nieces and nephews: Abby Blaising, Sam (Grace) Blaising, Dylan Sutter, Luke Sutter, and Colton Deehr; sister-in-law: Maxine Sutter of Fredericktown; and many Metzger and Sutter cousins and extended friends of the Settlement with whom she was very close. In addition to her parents, Rosemary was preceded in death by her brother: Robert J. Sutter, Sr.; and beloved nephew: Robert J. “Bob” Sutter, Jr.
Family and friends are welcome on Friday, December 13, 2024 from 4-7 pm at the Penwell Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby where a rosary will be recited at 7 pm. Rosemary’s Funeral Mass will be Saturday, December 14, 2024 at 10:30 am at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 5741 State Route 61, Shelby. Msgr. Dennis Metzger will celebrate the mass with Fr. Jeff Smith concelebrating. Burial will be with her parents in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart School.
Condolences may be left on Rosemary’s obituary on the funeral home’s website (PenwellFuneralHome.com) or their Facebook page (Facebook.com/PenwellFuneralHome).
Timothy Michael “Tim” Ney, 73, of Mansfield passed away into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the ultimate comforter and healer, on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.
Tim was born October 18, 1951 and raised in Shelby, Ohio to his loving parents Donald and LaVonne (Cale) Ney. He graduated from Shelby High School where he met the love of his life, his high school sweetheart, Nancy. During those same years, he gave his heart to Jesus at the encouragement of Pastor Whitesel at the First Church of God.
Following graduation in 1970, Tim worked as a dispatcher for the Ohio State Highway Patrol, a job that provided seemingly endless stories to share. He then moved on to work as an Inventory Analyst at the “Tuby”, a career he retired from 40 years later. He was proud of his career, enjoyed his coworkers, and was always thankful for the life he was able to provide his family.
An avid sports fan, Tim thoroughly enjoyed keeping up with his kids, grandkids, nieces, and nephews and various other athletic adventures throughout the years. He and Nancy, as well as friends, often traveled to attend NASCAR races and later, Indy Car events. Tim cherished his memories of many family vacations and adventures to the Smokey Mountains and, more recently, growing in his faith alongside Nancy with trips to The Cove in North Carolina.
Tim’s faith played a crucial role in his life and he worked hard to instill his faith in his children, modeling Christlikeness, integrity, and love as a husband, father, grandfather, friend, and volunteer at the Richland Pregnancy Center.
Tim was extremely devoted to reminding his family, friends, bible study group, and many more that he loved and supported them. He showed his love through daily phone calls of encouragement and love to his sisters, son, daughters, and whoever else popped into his heart and prayers that day.
Tim is survived by his favorite person on earth, his beloved wife, Nancy (Sellers) Ney; his son: Joshua (Jessica) Ney; and daughters: Natalie (Neil) Genson and Rachel (Quinn) Sexton. He adored his sisters, Linda Eith and Karen (Michael) Will, and rarely went a day without telling them. Left to share sweet memories of Uncle Tim are his nephews: Brian Eith, Erik (Katie) Will; and nieces: Lisa Owens and Nychole (Scott) Rose; and many great nieces and nephews. Everyone who knew Tim understood that he loved nothing more than spending quality time loving, chatting, and hugging on his seven grandchildren, his “nippers”, Landon, Lauren, Emily, Hayden, Quinn, Reese, and Gigi. He was preceded in death by his adored father Donald Eugene Ney and mother LaVonne Marilyn (Cale) Ney.
