Merlin G. King, age 83, of Shelby, died Saturday, September 27, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born August 14, 1931 in Shelby the son of the late Franklin Boag and Vivian (Hunter) King. Merlin was a 1949 graduate of Shelby High School and was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the United States Army.
Merlin retired from the City of Shelby Water Department as Distribution Superintendent after 30 years of service and went on to work for 27 years for F.E. Krocka and Associates. He was a member of First United Church of Christ in Shelby. He was a very active member of Shelby American Legion, O’Brien Post #326 holding most of the offices and had been Past District Commander of District #5 covering 10 counties in Ohio – the largest in the state.
Baseball was a huge part of Merlin’s life. As a coach for over 50 years, he was a long time fixture on the sandlots around the city. He influenced many area young men. His strong family values spilled out to those around him. Merlin’s sense of humor and calm demeanor quelled many a storm in the dugouts and on the fields over the years.
Merlin is survived by his wife of 63 years, Alice M. (Kollar) King whom he wed on August 11, 1951; 5 children: Lou Ellen (Richard Jr.) Huff of Shelby, Larry Gene (Rosanna) King of Tiro, Clifford Alan (Darlene) King of Shelby, Kevin Lynn King (Michelle Metcalf) of Shelby, Janice Marie “Jinx” (Donald ) Cooke of Shelby; 14 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter: Crystal Cooke in 2012; 3 brothers: Clifford King, Robert King, and Harold King.

Long-time Shelby resident, Roger W. Adam, age 92, died Friday, September 26, 2014 at Crestwood Care Center in Shelby.
Roger was born October 12, 1921 in Britton, Michigan the son of the late Frank and Carrie (Schull) Adam. He was a 1939 graduate of Shelby High School serving as class president for three years and represented the school at Buckeye Boys State in 1938.
After graduation he attended Heidelberg College on a government program, and as a result of that schooling, he worked as a nitrator (mixer of chemicals in making explosives for bombs) at the Plumbrook TNT plant in Sandusky. In 1942, Roger enrolled in the government’s V5 program and attended many Navy flight schools around the country. He received his Navy wings as a pilot, navigator and bombardier in 1944. As an Ensign, he left for the South Pacific in 1945 and flew Navy 4 engine patrol bombers from several islands including Iwo Jima. He flew cover for the surrender of the Japanese at the island of Truk and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with 2 stars and other campaign ribbons. He was released from active duty in 1946 and in 1947 he married Catherine “Katie” Sheridan.
As Roger and Katie began their life together, Roger began his working career at Miller Shelby Products. After several name changes, it became Quanex and over the next 35 ½ years, Roger had many different jobs there. In 1982 he retired as the Director of Industrial Relations.
Roger was very active in community endeavors, serving on the following boards: Rehabilitation Services of North Central Ohio, United Fund of Shelby, Shelby Girl Scout Little House, Girl Scout Council of Mansfield and St. Mary’s Church Cemetery. When his son Denny was young, he served as a Little League baseball coach and in his later years, he was a courier for Med Central Shelby Hospital for 22 years, and delivered Meals on Wheels. He and his wife Katie were proud recipients of the Jess Rath Christian Volunteer Service Award. In 2010, Roger was inducted into the Shelby High School Hall of Distinction. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking.

He was preceded in death by: his dear wife, Katie in 2011; 6 brothers: Ford, Jack, Richard, Russell, Raymond, and Roscoe Adam; and a sister: Nellie Lorentz.

Barbara Ann “Bobbie” Hogsette, age 76, of Shelby, died Friday, September 19, 2014 at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.
Bobbie was born June 3, 1938 in Philadelphia, PA, the daughter of the late William Burdsell and Dorothea Evelyn (Sutton) Richardson. Throughout her life, Bobbie was a very active individual with her family, churches, and communities. As a housewife, Bobbie raised and cared for her family and supported their endeavors including being a den mother for her sons’ Cub Scouts troops. She was very active in her church life leading Bible studies and teaching Sunday school. Currently, Bobbie was a member of the First Baptist Church in Shelby. She was a disciple of Christ in all aspects of her life. While living in Panama, Bobbie ministered to local peoples through her church. When in Israel, she took classes on Biblical archeology and had the opportunity to go on digs in Old Jerusalem. Bobbie and her husband, Harold, lived all over the world including Saudi Arabia, Panama, Israel, Florida, Tennessee, and finally settled in Shelby in 2001 where they moved to be closer to family and support her grandchildren’s various activities.
On May 28, 1960 Bobbie married Robert Harold Hogsette and he survives. Also surviving are two sons: Robert H. (Susan E.) Hogsette, Jr. of Lexington and David S. (Renjie) Hogsette of Grove City, PA; 2 grandchildren: Kate E. Hogsette and Paul R. Hogsette. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-father, Andrew Eisler.

Lucinda L. “Cindy” Mayer, age 71, of Shelby, died Monday, September 15, 2014 at Kindred Hospital in Mansfield.
Cindy was born August 15, 1943 in Shelby, the daughter of the late Francis and Martha (Bishop) Mayer. She was a 1961 graduate of Shelby High School. After high school she worked at Shelby Mutual Insurance Company, Lumbermens Mutual Insurance Company, Kelly Girl Services and Gorman Rupp. She was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Cindy loved animals, especially cats and horses, and enjoyed traveling, fishing, and crocheting. Cindy was very caring and giving towards all of her family members. They and many others were the recipients of her beautiful crocheted works.
Cindy is survived by a brother: David (Pat) Mayer of Shelby; a sister: Sue (Ben) Delarber of Shelby; 4 nephews; 5 nieces; 18 great nieces and great nephews; numerous cousins.

Larry C. Fike, age 70, of Shelby, died Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at Hospice House of North Central Ohio in Ashland.
He was born October 12, 1943 in New Washington, the son of the late Charles and Mildred (Weithman) Fike. Larry was a member of the first class to graduate from the Buckeye Central High School in 1961 and went on to serve as a member of the Ohio National Guard. He retired from Copperweld in Shelby in 2002 after 39 years of service. Larry was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church and the Shelby Knights of Columbus.
Larry enjoyed family, racing, and travel. It might be taking the family out for steaks or running “Thee Menace” down the track in under 11 seconds. He was most happy chasing sunsets in the RV and seeing where the road took them.
On July 4, 1970 he married Mary J. (Miller) Fike and she survives along with 4 children: Christopher (Jen) Fike of Akron, Jen (Erik) Anderson of Galena, Michael (Shannon) Fike of Macomb, MI, Bryan Fike of Lexington; 6 grandchildren: Owen Fike, Jaxon and Travis Anderson, and Anna, Adam and Eli Fike. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister: Lucy Fike.

Maurice Jackson “Jack” Hall, age 76, of Shelby, died Saturday, September 6, 2014 at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.
Jack was born on May 22, 1938 in Mt. Vernon, Ohio the son of the late Dean M. and Nellie M. (Bebout) Hall. He was a 1956 graduate of Shiloh High School. Jack retired from General Motors in Ontario as a scheduling supervisor after 30 years of service. He loved to golf, fish, and hunt but above all he was devoted to his family.
Jack is survived by 2 sons: Jack Jeffrey (Shanna) Hall of California, Joel (Michelle) Hall of Lodi; 2 grandsons: Spencer Hall, Marshall Hall; a sister: Molly Jo (Robert) Elliott of Mobile, AL; a brother: Robert Hall of Plymouth. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Hamman.

John F. Ensman, age 77, of Shelby, died Thursday, September 4, 2014 at his home.
John was born September 8, 1936 in Shelby, son of the late Fredrick and Frances (Spangler) Ensman. He was a 1954 graduate of Shelby High School. After 43 years of service, John retired from Copperweld in Shelby. He was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church where he had been on Parish Council, St. Mary School Board, and was a lay distributor. He was also a member of the Shelby Knights of Columbus. Sunday evening meals with his children and grandchildren were cherished moments in John’s life.
On June 28, 1958 John married Carol A. Heydinger at Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church in North Auburn and she survives. Also surviving are 6 children: Kurt Ensman of Galion and his children: Kendra, Kirsten, Kurt M. Ensman; Jeff (Jennifer) Ensman of Lebanon and their children: John G. and Joel Ensman; Kenneth (Julie Kay) Ensman of Shelby and their children: Andrew (Sierra) Ensman, Kayla (John) Roberts, Christopher (Mandy) Ensman, Sarah (Donald) Adkins, Erica (Tyler) Fairchild; Angee (Richard) Hostetler of Shelby and their children: Emma and Jared Mose Hostetler; Lisa (David) Hedrick of Norwalk and their children: Grady, Meghan, Davis, and Ryan Hedrick; Jody Ensman of Lexington, KY; 6 great grandchildren. Charles Richard “Chuck” Phillips, age 85, of Shelby, died Monday, September 1, 2014 at his home.
He was born August 6, 1929 in Mansfield, the son of the late Albert L. and Germaine R. (Lambermont) Phillips. Chuck was a 1947 graduate of Shelby High School and was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War serving in Florida and Turkey. Chuck’s working career was in computer programming having worked at Wilkins Air Force Depot, Mansfield Telephone Company, AMF, Lumbermen’s Mutual Insurance, First National Bank in Mansfield and North Central Technical College – from which he retired in 1995 as the director of the IT department.
He was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church where he had been an altar server, lay distributor, usher and a member of the St. Mary’s School Board. Chuck was also a member of Shelby American Legion, Catholic War Veterans, Shelby Knights of Columbus, and Mansfield Liederkranz.
Chuck enjoyed spending time in the kitchen. He was a very good cook as he especially liked cooking Sunday dinner and making cookies. Traveling was another source of enjoyment. No matter where he went – driving around the area country side or around Europe when he was in the service – he liked it all. However, his greatest joy was his family. He cherished the times he spent with his girls and their families.
He is survived by his 5 daughters: Susan (Dale) Black of Toledo, Karen (Jack) Brumenschenkel of Shelby, Sally Phillips of Shelby, Kelly (Dan) Wurm of Mansfield, and Mary (Marc) Rodriguez of Shelby; 3 granddaughters: Emily Wurm, Rachel Brumenschenkel, and Morgan Brumenschenkel; 2 step grandsons and 2 step great grandsons; 2 sisters-in-law: Irma (Vince) Studer of Shelby and Helen Kempf of Fairborn; several nieces and nephews. On February 23, 1957 he married Beda M. Kempf and she preceded him in death in 2011; also preceding him were: his parents; 2 brothers: John Phillips and James Phillips; 4 sisters: Thelma Fulmer, Gertrude Greenwood, Viola Wenzlick and Frances C. Phillips.

David Dean Worthington, age 78, of Shelby, died Friday, August 15, 2014 at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in Columbus.
David was born August 16, 1935 in Willard, the son of the late Rollin G. and Evelyn E. (Croushaw) Worthington. He was a 1956 graduate of Shelby High School and retired from the Air National Guard at Mansfield Lahm Airport in 1990 after 30 years of service. He enjoyed boating and camping.
David is survived by: 2 nephews: Steve Worthington of Florida, Paul Worthington of Lucas; a niece: Stephanie Fox of Georgia; 2 great nephews: William and Sammy Fox; aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father in 1992, his mother in 1998, and a brother, Rollin “Bill” Worhtington in 2010.

Carl Nolen, age 63, of Shelby, died Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at his home.
Carl was born September 24, 1950 in Mansfield, the son of the late Cecil and Goldie (Duff) Nolen. He was a 1968 graduate of Mansfield Senior High School and earned an associate’s degree from The Ohio State University. Carl was a veteran of the Army serving in Vietnam. He had worked at Westinghouse in Mansfield until its closing and then worked in metal fabrication for various local companies. Carl was a member of the Crawford County Sportsman’s Club.
Carl is survived by: a daughter: Michelle Gillin of Indiana; a granddaughter: Elizabeth Gillin; 6 siblings: Agnes (Charles) Hensley of Crestline, Madeline Stone of Mansfield, Cegar (Lydia) Nolen of Shelby, Evelyn (Larry) Guill of Mansfield, Judy (Tom) Guill of Shelby, Pamela (Keith) Scaggs of Mansfield; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
