Paul R.”Dick” “Hosey” Jose

Paul R.”Dick”  “Hosey” Jose, age 81, of Shelby, died Tuesday evening, September 17, 2013 at his home after a short illness.

He was born January 13, 1932 in Waverly, Ohio the son of the late Chester and Pauline (Bucy) Jose. He was a 1951 graduate of Waverly High School and was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the Junior Order and Woody Ridge Golf Course. He enjoyed all sports and fishing with his buddy Pete.

Paul is survived by his wife Betty Miller Humphrey Jose, whom he wed on June 20, 1964; a son: Craig (Sarah) Jose of Ontario; a daughter: Paula (Joe) Wheeler of Mansfield; 2 step daughters: Pamela (Roger) Crager of Rome and Kathy (Frank) Long of Mt. Gilead; 6 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; 5 step great grandchildren; 2 brother: Marvin (Sandy) Jose of Myrtle Beach and Edward (Mildred) Jose of Brooksville, FL; 2 step sister: Maxine (Ronnie) Detillion of Shelby and Lu Ella (Clarence) Canter of Portsmouth; a brother-in-law: Robert (Ella) Campbell of Lake Wales, FL; 2 sister-in-laws: Audrey Campbell Tarolli of Owosso, MI and Edith (Eugene) Bushey of Mt. Pleasant, MI.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife: Dorothy Campbell Jose in 1962; step grandson: Roger Crager, Jr.; 2 brothers: Harlan “Jack” Jose and Gail “Mickey” Jose; a sister: Edith Ann “Topsy” Claytor.

Friends are welcome on Sunday, September 22, 2013 from 2-5 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where funeral services  will be conducted on Monday at 11:30 AM by Rev. Richard Moore. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery in Shelby with military honors. Memorial expressions may be made to Med Central Hospice.

Cristine Lucille Adkinson

Cristine Lucille Adkinson, age 47, of Shelby went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at Med Central Shelby Hospital after a courageous battle.

She was born October 12, 1965 in Fort Benning, Georgia. She was a 1984 graduate of Plymouth High School and received her master’s degree in education from Ashland University. Cris was an intervention specialist for Shelby City Schools where she loved teaching her students. She was an active member of Shelby First Church of God and enjoyed fellowship with many other congregations. Cris was a devout follower of Jesus Christ having unbreakable faith which kept her fighting each day. With her walk with Christ, she was truly healed and at peace.

She enjoyed reading, supporting her children in their numerous activities and caring for her beloved dog, Queenie. However, her greatest joy was spending time with her husband and children.

Cris is survived by her husband: Braden T. Adkinson whom she wed on March 12, 1994; 2 daughters: Cara Hall of St. Clairsville, OH and Emily Adkinson a student at Ursuline College; a son: Kendall Adkinson a freshman at Shelby High School; her parents: Barbara and Bill Bland of Shelby; 2 siblings: Kathy (Mike) Gardner of Willard and Jimmy Elliott of Shelby; her father-in-law: Waldon (Ina) Adkinson of Kentucky; Braden’s 7 brothers and sisters and their spouses; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother-in-law: Sue Adkinson.

Loren Edward Hipsher

Loren Edward Hipsher, of rural Crestline, died Monday, September 16, 2013 as a result of a tractor accident on the family farm. He was 64.

Known to family and friends as “Hippie”, “Charlie” or “Eddie”, he was born December 4, 1948 in Shelby to Loren Fried and Martha I. (Sonnanstine) Hipsher. After graduating from Buckeye Central High School in 1966, he then became a Paratrooper in the US Army, serving during the Vietnam Era in Panama. Charlie worked his entire career at ArcelorMittal in Shelby where he retired after 45 years of service. Charlie was a master at puttering and tinkering being able to fix anything. He took great pride in the maintenance of his home, lawn, landscaping, and the family homestead.

On September 28, 1973 he married Rose M. (Hanovich) and she survives. Also surviving are: his mother: Martha I. Hipsher of Crestline; 7 siblings: Peggy (Richard) Armstrong of Worthington, Donna (Charles) Dean of Crestline, Edna Albright of Plymouth, Mary (James) Koeper of Hollywood, SC, Debra (Ronald) Lutz of Tiffin, Annette (Bradley) Richards of New Washington, Timothy (Robin) Hipsher of Crestline; brother in law: Duane Bosley; many nieces, nephews, and friends; and his ever faithful canine companion, Rambo.  He was preceded in death by: his father: Loren F. Hipsher in 2008; mother and father in law: Margaret and Stephen Hanovich; sister in law: Barbara Bosley; brother in law: William Albright.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Pastor Jay Scott, Pastor of Tiro United Methodist Church, will officiate and burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery in Shelby. Military honors will be conducted by the Richland County Joint Veteran Burial Detail. Jennifer Lynn Sprankle

Jennifer Lynn Sprankle, age 42, of Shelby, died Thursday, September 5, 2013 at Hospice House of North Central Ohio in Ashland after a long illness.

She was born October 12, 1970 in Shelby and was a 1990 graduate of Shelby Senior High School and Pioneer Joint Vocational School where she studied horticulture. She then attended Agriculture Technical Institute (ATI) in Wooster for two years. Jennifer had been employed at Schumacher’s Flower Shop, Packaging Insights, Inc. and Thorp Manufacturing all in Shelby. Jennifer remained positive and determined throughout her 10 year battle with cancer.

Jennifer is survived by her husband: Jesse L. Sprankle whom she wed on May 18, 1996; a daughter: Brittany Nycole Sprankle at home; Mother: Susan Pollock of Shelby; Mother-in-law: Marilyn Sprankle of Shelby; Close Friends: Tammy Fellows and Cathy Uplinger; along with other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her brother: Jeffry Allen Pollock in 1993.

Florence Ida (Pry) Hannafus

Florence Ida (Pry) Hannafus, 101, was called to her heavenly home on August 16, 2013, surrounded by her family and under the loving care of the staff of Crestwood Care Center, Shelby, Ohio.

She was born June 6, 1912, in Vernon Township, Crawford County, Ohio, to Daniel E. and Elrita (Wachs) Pry.  Florence was a graduate of the Class of 1930 from Tiro High School.  On June 8, 1933, she married Ernest F. Hannafus and has been a citizen of Shelby since that time. As an 80 year member of First Lutheran Church in Shelby, she was active in the Ruth Gleaners Sunday School and Miriam Circle.

She had been an employee of The Elsie Louise Shoppe and Snowhite Cleaners in Shelby, but considered her most important role in life as a homemaker, taking care of her family.  Her many interests over her long lifetime include gardening, sewing, quilting, reading, word search, music and most of all the special times with her family.

Florence is survived by her five daughters, Lourita Yore, Shelby, Carole (Jerry) Pittis, Bedford, OH, Ruth (Donald) Bolles, Ontario, Pamela (Robert) Blankenhorn, Mansfield and Mary Lee (Art) Barr, Ashland, her brother Eldon (Carol) Pry, Crestline; grandchildren Timothy Yore, Lisa Kempf, Jane Williams and Heather Baker of Shelby, Kevin Bolles and Kari Case of Mansfield, Todd Pittis, Chardon, OH, Brad Pittis, Garrettsville, OH, Laura Orlosky, Bedford, OH, Andrew Hopkins, Lewis Center, OH, Kimberly McHenry, Susan Yore, and Tonya Prewitt of Michigan, and Heidi Hopkins of Oregon; 29 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister Lethia Brundage, a brother Warren Pry, grandson Rev. Aaron Blankenhorn and son-in-law Kenneth Yore.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, August 21, 2013, at 10 am, at First Lutheran Church, 33 Broadway, Shelby, Ohio, with Reverend Russel Yoak officiating.  Burial at Oakland Cemetery will immediately follow the service. Friends may call at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 W Main St, Shelby on Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm.

Teresa Marie Christopherson Moorehouse

Teresa Marie Christopherson Moorehouse, age 44, of Shelby, died at her home on Thursday, August 15, 2013.

She was born on January 5, 1969 in Torrance, California. She graduated from Ontario High School and received a Bachelor’s Degree in graphic design from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. She was a former employee of Copperweld in Shelby and Toucan Golf in Mansfield. She attended Shelby Alliance Church.

Teresa is survived by her husband: Gary Moorehouse; her parents, Dennis and Jacqueline (Bricker) Christopherson of Shelby; Children: Jeffrey Christopherson of Mansfield, Kevin Christopherson of Indiana, Alicia Christopherson of Mansfield, Austin Moorehouse at home, Christopher Moorehouse of Missouri, Nicholas Hayes of Missouri and Daniel Moorehouse of Mansfield; 3 grandchildren; 2 brothers: Dennis Christopherson of Mansfield and Kris Christopherson of Shelby. She was preceded in death by a sister: Roberta Christopherson.

Dorotha V. Hochenshilt

Dorotha V. Hochenshilt, age 98, formerly of Shelby, died Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at The Good Shepherd  in Ashland.

Dorotha was born May 8, 1915 in Jackson Township, Richland County, Ohio the daughter of the late Bert and Rhea (Hoffman) White. She graduated from Shelby High School in 1933 and married Glenn L. Hochenshilt on March 4, 1944. Dorotha was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Shelby and the Sunshine Club. She was a librarian in Chesterville, a homemaker, and supported her husband’s careers of farming, teaching and coaching. Four generations of nieces and nephews have enjoyed the loving kindness of their “Aunt Dorotha”. She made time for her nieces and nephews with vacations on the farm and playing games. Over the years she gifted them with many crocheted items.

She is survived by nieces and nephews: Ann (Doug) Hedrick of Shelby, Eugene (Judy) White of Bellevue, Roger (Joan) White of Montana, Mary (Joe) Platt of Bucyrus, Sue (Jim) Rabold of New Mexico and many great and great great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by:  her parents; her husband, Glenn; a brother and sister-in-law, Wilbur and Helen White; a sister –in-law: Mary Hochenshilt; a sister and brother-in-law: Viola and Herbert Davis; an infant brother; and a niece, Lucille (John) Ocker;  other nieces and cousins.

Jay E. Lybarger

Jay E. Lybarger, age 90, formerly of Shelby, passed away Monday morning, August 5, 2013 at Brookwood Place at Brethren Care Village in Ashland where he had resided since 2005.

Jay was born April 6, 1923 in Shelby, the son of the late Oliver D. and Maude E. (Laser) Lybarger. He was a 1941 graduate of Shelby High School and received an Associate’s Degree in Accounting from Ashland College. Jay served his country in the US Army during World War II. During his service time, Jay had the opportunity to attend Mass in Rome at which time, he was touched by  Pope Pius XII; a story he relished repeating many times in his lifetime. As a young man he farmed with his dad and then spent a 44 year career as the head accountant for the Shelby Sales Book Company. He was a member of Shelby American Legion and First United Methodist Church in Shelby where he was an usher for over 60 years. He was a recipient of the Jess Rath Christian Service Award recognizing him for his many hours of volunteer service to the community helping the United Way, Salvation Army, Meals on Wheels and FISH.

Jay’s leisure activities included walking, golfing and visiting and joking with friends and family. He took credit for teaching his daughters, Susan and Amy, and his “adopted daughter”, Nancy Cramer how to play golf. He enjoyed watching Ohio State and Shelby Whippet football. Jay also traveled extensively, visiting Europe, Canada, Mexico and most of the United States.

Surviving Jay are his daughters: Susan Lybarger of Shelby and Amy (Gary) Metzger of Ashland, a sister, Doris (George) Williams of Shelby along with many members of the extended Lybarger family.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Marjorie E. (Keck) Lybarger in July of 2010; 3 sisters: Ada Radke, Marguerite Unkel, and Clara Bosko and a brother, Lemuel O. Lybarger.

Friends and family are welcome on Friday, August 9, 2013 from 10 to 11 AM at First United Methodist Church, 18 South Gamble Street, Shelby. Funeral service will begin at 11 AM with Pastor Tom Snyder officiating. A luncheon will be served for all those attending immediately after the service in the church fellowship hall. Elizabeth A. “Beth” Haines

Elizabeth A. “Beth” Haines, age 75, of Shelby, died Thursday, July 25, 2013 at Med Central Mansfield Hospital.

She was born August 12, 1937 in Greenwich, Ohio the daughter of Creston E. and Mildred (Miller) Haines. She was a graduate of Greenwich High School. She started working right out of high school at Shelby Mutual Insurance Company and worked there her entire career until her retirement. She was a very active member of First United Methodist Church in Shelby. Beth enjoyed reading and walking and had a very generous and giving heart.

Beth is survived by 5 nephews: Mark (Ruth) Hulthen of Stow, OH , Michael (Lynn) Hulthen of Medina, OH,  Martin (Amy) Hulthen of Westerville, OH, Matthew (Trina) Hulthen of Copley, OH, Robert Haines of Greenwich, OH; 1 niece: Rochelle Haines of Greenwich, OH; 7 great nieces and nephews: Tony Billman, Emily Hulthen, Kyle Hulthen, Alyssa Hulthen, Anne Hulthen, Laynee Hulthen, Temi Hulthen. She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 sisters: Jean Carol Hulthen and Christine Haines; and a brother: Robert Haines.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 AM Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church, 18 South Gamble Street, Shelby with Pastor Tom Snyder officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Greenwich. A luncheon will be served at the church prior to going to the cemetery.

Kenneth H. Place, Jr.

Kenneth H. Place, Jr., age 78, of Shelby, passed away Saturday, July 6, 2013 at Mansfield Med Central Hospital following a brief illness.

Ken was born January 2, 1935 in Mansfield, Ohio to the union of Kenneth, Sr. and Helen (Barteszwski) Place. He was a graduate of Shelby Senior High School and a veteran of the United States Army. He was preceded in death by both parents.

Ken was an avid car collector, fisherman & motorcycle enthusiast. He could often be found buffing and waxing his cars, motorcycle or boat during his spare time. Ken was a tried and true family man who enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. A friend to everyone, he could always be counted on to help anyone out should the occasion call for it. He will be greatly missed by all who were lucky enough to call him husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend.
