Virgil E. “Junior” Smith, Jr.

Virgil E. “Junior” Smith, Jr. age 64 of Shelby, died Sunday, February 19, 2017 at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in Columbus after a brief illness.

He was born May 16, 1952 in Shelby and was a 1970 graduate of Shelby Senior High School. Junior worked at AMF in Shelby until its closing and then worked at Expedx Paper Company and retired from U.S. Holland Trucking Company. He was a huge drag racing and motorcycle racing enthusiast. Junior enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and especially loved attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.

Virgil is survived by his wife of 45 years, Eileen G. (Crowner) Smith, whom he wed on April 8, 1972; 2 children: Scott (Katy) Smith of Crestline and Jill (Tobey) Stoffer of Bucyrus; 4 grandchildren: Gage Stoffer, Hayli Stoffer, Sarah Smith and Tyler Smith; his mother: Annis M. (Potter) Smith of Shelby; a sister: Loretta (John) Barrett of Shelby. He was preceded in death by his father: Virgil E. Smith, Sr. and by his in-laws: Gerald and Edna Crowner.

Family and friends are welcome on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 23, 2017 at 10:30 AM at the funeral home. Rev. James MacDonald of First United Methodist Church in Shelby will officiate. Graveside services will follow at 2 pm in Sand Ridge Cemetery, Hanover Township, Ashland County. Memorial expressions may be made to First United Methodist Church.
