Marilyn R. DeWitt

Marilyn R. DeWitt, longtime Shelby resident and currently of Norwalk, died Thursday afternoon, July 17, 2025 at Fisher Titus Hospital in Norwalk. Marilyn lived a long and fulfilling 99 ½ years.

Born Christmas Day, December 25, 1925 in Shelby to Sherman and Myrtle A. (Broughton) Strouse, she graduated from Shelby High School in 1943. On March 21, 1951 she married Carl F. DeWitt and together they celebrated 56 years of marriage prior to his passing in 2007. Throughout her life Marilyn had been employed at Shelby Metal Products, Shelby Business Forms, and Ballanoff Products. For hobbies, she enjoyed making ceramics, playing bingo and cards, and going camping. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Shelby.

Marilyn is survived by her son and daughter-in-law: Mark and Anne DeWitt of Norwalk; grandchildren: Kevin DeWitt, Michael Woods DeWitt, Steve DeWitt, Alex DeWitt, Marianne Schenk, and Andrew DeWitt; numerous great grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, Marilyn was preceded in death by her son: Garry DeWitt; stepfather: Wilbert Butterfield; brother: Glenn Strouse; and sister: Corrine Fisher.

Family and friends are welcome on Thursday, July 24, 2025 from 10-11 am at the Penwell Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby. A procession to Oakland Cemetery for graveside services and burial will immediately follow the visitation.

    Marilyn was a dear and loving person. I enjoyed spending time with her although later in life. I learned that she was a sister to my Aunt Connie…Corrine Fisher.

    Mark and family, I’m so sorry for the loss of your mom and our wonderful Aunt Marilyn. She was always a delight and I don’t think I ever saw her without a smile. I still put up my favorite ceramic Christmas tree ornaments (from my Nanny’s collection) that she and Uncle Carl made with so much love. This year they will be even more special. Much love to all of our family who will miss her dearly.
