Kyle Elizabeth (Mitchell) Coleman

Kyle Elizabeth (Mitchell) Coleman, of Shelby, died Thursday, July 17, 2025 at her home surrounded by her family.  Her death, followed by a nearly three-year courageous battle with cancer, came just ten days prior to her sixtieth birthday.

Born July 27, 1965 in Shelby to Raymond and Lela M. (Williams) Mitchell, she graduated in 1983 from Shelby High School. On December 11, 1993 Kyle married John Paul Coleman, celebrating nearly 32 years of happiness and memories. For work, Kyle was a 16-year employee of Kroger then became the proud owner/operator of Buckeye Self Storage in Shelby. Additionally, she was a key counterpart in the operation of their family business, Coleman Asphalt.

Sixteen years ago, Kyle fulfilled a lifelong dream by building her ideal home with her family. It became a place filled with love, laughter, and warmth. She especially cherished evenings spent on the back porch, sharing stories and watching the deer and wildlife that roamed the property. One of her greatest joys was designing her dream kitchen—a space fondly known as “Kyle’s Kitchen.” It was the heart of the home, always filled with the aroma of something delicious, where family and friends gathered to enjoy her cooking and the comfort of being together. Kyle and John also shared many special dates, often cruising to Lake Erie. They would make little stops along the way, always ending with their favorite: a perch sandwich by the water.

In addition to her husband, John, Kyle is survived by their sons: Samuel (Natalie) Coleman and Timothy Coleman both of Shelby; her parents: Ray and Lela Mitchell of Shelby; brothers: Tim (Sara) Mitchell of Dublin, Stewart (Michelle) Mitchell of Shelby, and Brent (Missy) Mitchell of Shelby; father-in-law: Paul Coleman and the entire Coleman family; and numerous other relatives and friends. Kyle was preceded in death by her mother-in-law: Marian Coleman.

Family and friends are welcome on Tuesday, July 22, 2025 from 3-7 pm at the Penwell Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, July 23, 2025 at 10:30 am at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, where Kyle was a member, 29 West Street, Shelby with Fr. Chris Mileski celebrating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary School.

  5. Rachel says:

Aunt Kyle was amazing! There are so many good memories that could be shared. I remember Mitchell-Coleman family reunions at Uncle John and Aunt Kyle’s old home, when they would make apple butter. They built such a beautiful new home. And they were always so hospitable! It was sweet to have the whole family together.
Aunt Kyle was hilarious! Even now I laugh remembering Uncle John and Aunt Kyle go back and forth with grandpa.
Today it’s awesome to follow the Coleman family business updates, and it’s a testament to Aunt Kyle raising her sons well. Not every family can work well together. That is not easy to accomplish, and more often than not takes a wonderful mother holding it all together.
In many ways Aunt Kyle lived “the dream.”

There are a lot of tears in our home right now. Much love to the family!

  7. maureen coleman says:

    Dear John, Sam, and Tim,
My fondest memories of Kyle are many however, two that I remember place her among the saints. First and foremost how courageously she and John picked up the baton of the Coleman reunions. It takes a brave soul to host the millions of Colemans for any gathering but especially our yearly reunions. Secondly, when my godfather, the man, the legend Uncle Paul, needed help rearranging flights to get home from Bradenton he had a minor mishap. Her incredible patience, her tenacity, and most of all her caring were so evident. This in the midst of her diagnosis. Yet, it wasn’t about her, it was how can I help my father-in-law. I witnessed the love between Uncle Paul and her. He reiterated his admiration for her and her love and caring. She opened not only her beautiful home, to this band of crazy Colemans, but more importantly she opened her heart to all of us. There really are no words, are there, only an unrepairable hole in our Universe.

    Dear John, Sam and Tim,
I wish I knew Kyle better and had many experiences to share at this time. Still John and I are terribly sorry for all that you have been enduring through Kyle’s long journey. It is a path we all travel along with our loved ones and then ultimately we travel it ourselves. The most loving gift we have to give is our presence and love as it all unfolds. Perhaps it is what evokes true empathy for one another in all of us. Kyle was truly loved. The tribute you wrote to her is full of care, respect, honor and love. She clearly had a beautiful life and a beautiful family. John, you and the boys have been blessed with the best that life has to give.
