Jim Stine, age 97, a lifelong Shelby resident, died early Thursday morning, December 18, 2025 at his home.

Jim was born February 28, 1928 in Shelby, the son of the late Otto and Teresa (Metzger) Stine. He graduated from Shelby High School in 1946 and subsequently served his country in the United States Navy and Naval Aviation from 1946-1948.

Jim married Marjorie Ann Stroup on May 16, 1950 and together they raised five children who survive: Gary (Laura) Stine, Craig Stine, Laurie (Phil) Korbas, Sally (Dan) Biglin, and Brent (Susan) Stine. Together they celebrated 33 years of marriage prior to Marge’s passing on December 28, 1983 at the age of 55.  On May 16, 1987, Jim married again to the former Shirley P. (Amstutz) Burky, his wife of 38 years, who survives along with her daughter, Kay (Jeff) Green.

Jim was well known for his talents in construction and carpentry. It not only was his work, but also a passion he carried with him throughout his entire life. One of his greatest pastimes was working in his shop in addition to golfing and bowling. Jim was a founding member of the Shelby Little League in 1953 and umpired for many years after. He also thoroughly enjoyed traveling and the 27 years he and Shirley wintered in Vero Beach, FL. A lifelong Catholic, Jim had been a member at both Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, Bethlehem, Shelby Settlement and Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Shelby. Additionally, he was a member of the Shelby Knight of Columbus.

Together, Jim and Shirley’s family consists of their children; grandchildren: Jason (Erin) Stine, Matthew (Bonnie) Stine, Brandon Stine, Adam (Laura) Stine, Aaron (Jackie) Stine, Ashley Korbas, Brad (Eliana) Korbas, Lee (Nikki) Biglin, Kali Biglin, Jena Biglin, Logan (Casey) Stine, Caleb (Lincoln) Stine, Leslie (Carlos) Rodriguez, Chet (Barb) Green, Tiffany (Matt) Brockett, and Ryan (Megan) Ward;  numerous great grandchildren: son-in-law: Dick Ward; and nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends too numerous to count.

Jim was the last surviving child of Otto and Teresa. In addition to his parents and wife, Marge, he was preceded in death by his siblings: Sabina Rice, Janet Yetzer, Mary Houpt, Darwin Stine, Marlene Misamore, and Charlotte Auer; and Shirley’s daughters: Sandra Burky and Cindy Ward.

Family and friends are welcome on Sunday, December 21, 2025 from 2-5 pm at the Penwell Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where a rosary will be recited at 5 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, December 22, 2025 at 10:30 am at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 5741 State Route 61, Shelby. Fr. Jeff Smith will celebrate the mass. 17. Tom & Kris Moloney says:

Jim was such a fine gentleman , family man and ace carpenter. He did a few small furniture restorations for Kris & me in his workshop along with my most
prized possession, he restored a wooden crucifix originally made in Zambia
by a native who was influenced by The Franciscan Missionaries from Carey.

We also shared a few conversations about how today’s big league pitchers can be nominated for the CY Young if they string a series of 5 or 6 inning
outings. This is as opposed to the old days when complete games were
needed and 5 or 6 inning guys were sent to the bullpen. This graveled both of us.

    Jim will be missed !!
    Tom & Kris Moloney

  18. Bill Van Horn says:

What a great guy! One of the nicest people I have ever known. At my age I am not remembering too well, but I think he told me, that he worked for Carl Koontz, when his crew built my parents’ home in 1948. He then remodeled my home, while working with Wendell Amstutz. Not sure of the year, but he left me his tools, to finish the woodwork, when he went on vacation. Can’t say enough about this great guy. My condolences to his family, who were lucky to have him as a family member.
