Charles Milton “Charlie” Shaffer

Charles Milton “Charlie” Shaffer, age 74, of Shelby, passed away Saturday, August 9, 2025 at home after a long battle with cancer. He was born June 3, 1951 in Shelby to Jacob “Jack” and Mary (Kirkpatrick) Shaffer.

Charlie was a lifelong Shelby resident, graduating from Shelby High School in 1970. He married Constance “Connie” (Davis) Shaffer on May 11, 1985.

Charlie made his living as a truck driver for many years, hauling freight for K&P, KLLM, Schneider, and FedEx. While on the road on November 17, 1989, he was called home to celebrate the birth of his daughter, Becky.

When not on the road, he enjoyed watching auto racing of all sorts, HO Scale model railroading, reading, and traveling. He built numerous street rods and customized pickup trucks as well. He was a self-taught musician, especially enjoying playing bass in numerous local bands including 30-06, Rock Bottom, and The Lost Spurs.

His whole world changed again with the welcoming of his granddaughter Emma in 2020, who adored her grandfather, affectionately referring to each other as “buddy”. They were inseparable and enjoyed many adventures together.

Charlie is survived by his wife: Connie; his daughter and son-in-law: Rebecca “Becky” and Collin Shaum of Galion; and his best buddy and granddaughter: Emma Shaum. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Janice Davis, of Shelby; in-laws: Gerald (Theresa) Davis of Austin, TX, Peter (Carol) Davis of Shelby, Karen Davis of Ocala, FL, Beth Cohen of Union, KY; and numerous treasured nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law: Michael Davis; and brother-in-law: Joe Davis.

Friends and family are welcome on Wednesday, August 13, 2025 from 4-7 pm at the Penwell Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby where funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 14, 2025 at 11 am.
