Penwell Turner Funeral Home - Shelby, Ohio

Joseph Charles Coon

Joseph Charles Coon, age 51, of Shelby, died Tuesday evening, June 12, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family and friends.

Joe was born August 11, 1966 in Shelby. He was a 1984 graduate of Shelby High School and attended Pioneer Joint Vocational School. Joe worked for 20 years at Gorman Rupp in Mansfield and, for the last 14 years, has been the manager of Stone Creations in Ontario. Joe was an incredibly active member of the Shelby Knights of Columbus Council #1968 where he had been Past Grand Knight and was currently the president of the Knicol Building Committee. He donated lots of time and energy to the K of C for its success. He was also a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Shelby.

Joe was a generous man in all that he did. He had donated several gallons of blood through the American Red Cross throughout his life and was eager to lend a helping hand. Joe was always ready to laugh and adored spending time with his family and friends whether that be at the lake, beach or on the back porch.

On April 8, 1989, Joe married the former Margaret A. Metzger. Marge survives along with 2 children: Emily (Brice) Eyerly of Ontario and Sam Coon of Shelby; his mother: Joan (Beal) Russell of Shelby; 5 siblings: Kathy Gilbert of Richmond, IN, Sue (Greg) Eyster of Shelby, Mike Coon of Crestline, Carla (Terry) Tash of Shelby, and Judy (Kerry) Nutter of Shelby; his mother-in-law and father-in-law: Ambrose and Betty Metzger of Shelby; and in-laws: Jim Metzger, Joe Metzger, and Mark (Stephanie) Metzger; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many many friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Coon.

Family and friends are welcome on Friday, June 22, 2018 from 4-8 pm at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby where a Christian Wake Service will be conducted at 8 pm. At Joe’s request, please dress casually for visitation hours. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at 1 pm at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 29 West Street, Shelby, with Fr. Chris Mileski officiating. Immediately following mass, a celebration of life event will be held at the Shelby Knights of Columbus Hall, 250 Vernon Road, Shelby. At 7:30 pm, in honor and appreciation of everything that Joe has done for the K of C Council #1968, a dedication ceremony of the back “bar” room will take place. All are welcome to attend both the celebration and the dedication ceremony.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Knicol Building Committee to help benefit the upkeep of the Shelby K of C Hall. Checks may be made payable to Knicol Building Committee and left in care of the funeral home. To share a memory or express a condolence, please visit, penwellturner.com
