Robert L. “Bob” Vogt

Robert L. “Bob” Vogt, age 85, of Crestline, died early Friday morning, September 17, 2021 at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital with his family by his side.

Bob was born October 25, 1935 in Holgate, Putnam County, Ohio, the son of the late Robert and Cornelia (Schroeder) Vogt. He was a 1953 graduate of Crestline High School and a veteran of the United States Army serving from 1955-1957. It was during his service, while stationed in Maryland, that Bob met his future wife, Shirley. They married on September 27, 1958 and celebrated nearly 63 years of marriage together.

Bob was an incredibly loving husband and father who worked hard to always provide for his wife and eight children. For 25 years he worked at General Motors in Ontario, retiring in 1998, and was also a farmer his entire life. Bob was a very faith filled man who loved to talk about his faith in Jesus. He was an active member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church where, throughout the years, he volunteered often including being a part of the cemetery committee and past chairman of the church’s annual festival. He and Shirley also were active with Charismatic Renewal through the Diocese of Toledo.

Bob was a very active lifetime member of the Crestline Knights of Columbus and was proud to have gone on a mission trip to Haiti with a church group in Galion where he assisted in building a school. A true storyteller, Bob relished sharing tales of his ornery childhood.  He was an avid golfer, took delight in fishing in his pond, and for 22 years enjoyed wintering in Florida with Shirley.

Bob is survived by his wife, Shirley A. (Ridgley) Vogt; their 8 children: Russell Vogt, Ken Vogt, Karen (Brian) Alt, Brian (Amy) Vogt, Kurt (Mel) Vogt, Kimberly (Jeff) Hatfield, Teresa (Charles) Jessee, and Sheryl (Jon) Foley all of the Shelby and Crestline areas; 19 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; his twin brother: Richard (Marilyn) Vogt; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law: Stacey Vogt; 2 brothers: Eugene Vogt and Virgil Vogt; and 4 sisters: Joanne Vogt, Esther Nadler, Mary Heichelbech, and Leoma Gordon.

Bob’s funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, September 20, 2021 at 11 am at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 5750 State Route 61 South, Shelby, with Fr. Jeff Smith officiating. Calling hours will not be observed. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Church or School.
