Russell P. Morris, Jr.

Russell P. Morris, Jr., age 71, of 29 Spruce Avenue, Shelby, died Thursday evening May 13, 1999 at Med Central Mansfield Hospital after a short illness.

He was born December 12, 1927 in Shelby, the son of Gertrude (Caudill) and Russell Morris, Sr. He attended Shelby City Schools and joined the Navy at age 18 at the end of World War II. Upon completion of his tour of duty in the Navy, he joined the Ohio Air National Guard at Mansfield Lahm Airport from which he retired in 1980. After his retirement, he became an avid craftsman. The 1987 flood in Shelby prompted him to volunteer his services for the Amrican Red Cross, where he became very active with the Disaster Relief Services. He traveled extensively all over the United States for the Red Cross as a logistics officer during natural disasters. Mr. Morris plowed snow for many Shelby businesses for 23 years.

He was a member of Shelby American Legion O’Brien Post #326 and a former member of the Shelby Owls. He was actively involved with Shadow Flight Organization, a retiree’s group at the Ohio Air National Guard. He loved working on his computer and researching genealogy. He took great pleasure in supporting his grandchildren’s school activities and volunteered his services for the Shelby girl’s softball league.

Survivors include his wife, Nadine (Laser) Morris, whom he wed on May 26, 1956; 2 sons and 1 daughter-in-law: John and Ruth Boor of Barberton, OH, and Stephan Morris of Shelby; 3 daughters: Sue Fisher of Centralia, Missouri; Denise Naugle and Debra Morris both of Shelby; 11 grandchildren; 2 sisters and a brother-in-law: Phyllis M. Steele and Connie and Larry Kuhn all of Shelby; a sister-in-law, Shirley Morris of Shelby.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Everett Eugene Morris; a sister, June Morris; and a brother-in-law, Claude Steele.

Calling hours will be on Sunday, from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the Turner Funeral Home in Shelby
where funeral services will be held on Monday at 10:00 A.M. with Rev. Thomas M. McFadden of the Shenandoah Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the Ohio Air National Guard. Memorial expressions may be made to the Red Cross Disaster Services.
