William M. Herlihy
William M. Herlihy, age 86, of Middleburg Heights and Shelby native, died Thursday evening, February 15, 2018 at Kemper House in Strongsville.
Bill was born July 24, 1931 in Shelby, Ohio, the son of the late James and Catherine (Metzger) Herlihy. Bill was a highly educated man. He was a 1949 graduate of Shelby High School where he was the Class President. He continued his education at Miami University from 1949-1953 where he earned a BS in Business Administration. From Miami, Bill served his country in the US Army during the Korean War from 1953-1955. Upon honorable discharge, he returned to the classroom, this time at Ohio University, from where he earned a BS in Business Education in 1955 and a MEd in 1958. His love for education transitioned from learning to teaching and, in 1958, he began a ten-year career at Parma Senior High School where he taught business classes. During his time at Parma, Bill developed the first secondary school data processing and business computer programming curriculum in the State of Ohio.
Following Parma High School, Bill took a position as a computer programmer for the Jewish Community Federation in Cleveland from 1968-1970. In 1970, Bill began a long career as a full-time faculty member at Cuyahoga Community College as an Associate Professor of Computer Science and was the Coordinator of Computer Science Department. He retired in 1996, after 26 years with Cuyahoga Community College, as Professor Emeritus of Computer Science. He also taught as an adjunct professor at Baldwin Wallace College.
Bill was an avid outdoor enthusiast, enjoying: canoeing, water sports, hiking, exploring nature, skiing, and running. He also enjoyed learning and reading about history.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 50 years, Joann E. (Montagino) Herlihy, whom he wed on December 21, 1968. Also surviving are: a daughter: Frances (Jeffrey) Snyder of Perrysburg, Ohio; a son: Matthew Herlihy of Atlanta, Georgia; 7 grandchildren: Avery, Aiden, and Janie Snyder and Annie, Finn, Will, and Lainey Herlihy; a sister: Anne C. (Emile) John of Shelby; a brother: Dennis Herlihy of Louisiana; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: a brother: James F. Herlihy; and a sister: Rosemary Bertka.
Family and friends are welcome on Sunday, February 18, 2018 from 2-4 pm at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 am. Fr. Nicholas Weibl will officiate, and burial will follow in Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. Memorial contributions may be made to Kemper House or Hospice of the Western Reserve.

Bill was a very good friend, who I will truly miss! I thought very highly of his abilities, knowledge, and judgment, and he was such an easy person to be around with a pleasant and caring attitude. He and I shared many of the same interests, and we enjoyed out-of-state canoe trips over many years. My family and I have fond memories of the time we spent with Bill, Joann, Fran, and Matt.
Our Prayers and sympathy are for Bill and his extended family. I have many great memories of our growing up while attending grade school at Most Pure Heart of Mary Parish, and later in high school. May he rest in peace.

I only met Bill while he was a resident of Kemper House. He had the warmest smile and sparkling eyes and I was so privileged to meet him. I will miss him.

Through the years we grew to appreciate his professional approach to his work, his friendship, and always his willingness to go the extra mile to help out in any situation. One of my favorite people! Just like the above picture shows, he always had a smile on his face. Many of my favorite childhood memories revolve around the Herlihy family with Mr. Herlihy right in the center. My condolences to the family.
Mr. Herlihy was the first faculty member I met when I started attending Tri-C West in 1975. The college was in the process of transitioning to the new campus. I met him in his office in the old Crile building where the ceiling was leaking and a large piece of plastic had been placed over his desk to keep the water off. I chuckle whenever I think of that meeting.
Mr Herlihy was a good man, a passionate professor and always friendly. I owe him much gratitude for my employment in the computer industry since my days at Tri-C. Thank you. Rest in peace.
I am so sad that my grandpa “Paw Paw” passed away. He will still be in my memory and I will forever love him. Even though I never talked to him becasue he had alzheimer’s I love him the highest number and even more! (becasue numbers don’t end) (haha get it) Now Paw Paw will be in heaven with God and be forever happy. He will look down at us and make sure we are doing the right things. I miss Paw Paw extreamly but he is up there for a reason. He was struggling and now he’s great. I love you Paw Paw! I will never forget your sweet loving smile.
