William C. “Bill” Briner

William C. “Bill” Briner, age 88, of Shelby, died Wednesday night, August 26, 2020 at the Crestwood Care Center in Shelby.

Bill was born March 22, 1932 in Delphi, Ohio to the late Newton J. and Gladys (Young) Briner. He was a 1950 graduate of Shelby High School and had worked at Wilken’s Air Force Depot before becoming a rural route mail carrier for the Shelby Post Office. However, Bill’s true love was farming which he did his entire life.

Anyone who knew Bill knew his love for story telling- which he excelled at. His enjoyment of people was exemplified in his hobbies which included tractor pulling each year all over the area, being a 4-H advisor for many years, and traveling. He loved his trip to Alaska, traveling the country in an RV, and going to Florida each year. He also enjoyed country music, John Wayne movies, and attending Calvary Baptist Church in Shelby.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife: Leola J. “Lee” (Maxwell) Briner in 2004; his second wife: Priscilla A. (Hines) Briner in 2018; a sister: Nancy Davis; and 2 half-brothers: Jim Kaylor and Tom Kaylor.

Bill is survived by his children: Pam (Tony) Hugel of North Ridgeville, Mary Lou Briner (Karin Zuckerman) of Columbus, and Charlie (Jennifer) Briner of Lexington; 4 grandchildren: Heather Wittig, Stephanie (Tom) Lewis, Aubrie (Nate) Hall, and Christopher Briner; 7 great grandchildren: Brandon, Levi, Allyson, Madison, Carson, Peyton, and Landon; his wife Priscilla’s children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Family and friends are welcome on Sunday, August 30, 2020 from 2-4 pm at the Penwell Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 31, 2020 at 1 pm at the funeral home. Rev. Steven L. Schag will officiate and burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery in Plymouth. I was so sad to hear the news of Bill’s passing. I met Bill & Lee years ago and considered them friends from the start. Bill used to bring me fudge when I worked at the Richland Cty. Fair & to Applebee’s when he’d come to visit me. I also knew Priscilla and was happy that Bill wasn’t alone after Lee passed. I will remember him always with love!!

    To the entire Briner Clan…
My deepest condolences to all of you. Some of my fondest memories of Bill and Felix were stopping in at the Post Office and going in off the dock to listen to them talk shop and of course gossip! Hopefully they can get together again and resume their chats!!! Phil (Felix 2.0!)

  10. Christine Lynch says:

Bill was a great and kind gentleman. He was our mailman for years when I was child. I have many fond memories of fishing in the pond at his home. He even bought my grandfather’s John Deere tractor after my grandfather passed. Bill would bring the tractor to the Richland Co. Fair to show. My condolences to the family.

Pam, Charlie and Mary Lou: so sorry to hear this. It is so hard to lose parents. Mom has been gone since June 1. Loved your Dad. He was funny and quite the teaser. Have lots of fond memories of being at the farm in the summer. It was a good time when cousins got together. Your folks were very special to me. Prayers for all of you as you go through this time. ❤️

Bill was the best mentor I could have ever asked for. He had a way of making work fun and enjoyable with his quick wit and endless tales. Not a week goes by that I don’t recall something Bill told me. On a lighter note, if you are reading this, I think you should know that Bill once gave me a wooden whistle …

  13. Richard Russell says:

Pam, Charlie and Mary Lou and Families:
Our sympathy during your time of loss. From Beech Grove 4-H meetings at your house and all the other places in our neck of the woods in Cass Township, then later when bill was our smiling mailman on Shelby RD#3, so many good memories. He was a good guy to know and he will definitely be missed.

  14. Barbara J. Eakins says:

    Charlie and Family,
Jim and I send sincere condolences to you and your entire family on the passing of your Dad. Jim knew Bill better than I did through Great Scot. Bill was our mailman for several years. One time I asked Tony Gwirtz what Bill liked as I wanted to know what to give him for a Christmas present. Tony told me he liked cigars, so I got him a couple of packs at the store even though we didn’t smoke. I guess he liked them because he told Jim we had spoiled him for the cheaper kind. : )
Many, many memories. We hope you have lots of good ones to help you through this time of sorrow.
    Sincerely, Barb Eakins

  15. Peggy Case says:

Many a card party at Lee,and Bill’s and later Priscilla and Bill”s! Getting together in Florida, playing cards and eating strawberry short cake. So many memories! Reunion at Bill’s for years. He’s been missed.

  17. DeWayne Schneider says:

    To the Entire Briner Family,
The Schneider family extends our condolences to all of you during this most difficult time.We had the privilege of having Bill as a friend and neighbor for many, many years. He also delivered our mail for many years, and he always had time to stop for a few minutes and chat about the weather and farming. Some of our best memories were over at his farm, where both of children learned how to fish, and play in the sand. We have several pictures on our wall from the special memories we shared. Bill was always quick with a good story, and he had the kids hooked until the punchline. He will definitely be missed.

    Sincerely, DeWayne and Dixie Schneider

So sorry to learn of your father’s death. That photograph reminds me of the huge smile that always seemed to brighten Bill’s face. He was a kind, wonderful man.

The parents of our PHS Class of ’74 are slowly dying off all too suddenly . . . . very sad.
