Virginia S. “Ginny” Dawson
Virginia S. “Ginny” Dawson, age 66, of Shelby, died Monday, March 12, 2018 at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital after a fifteen-month battle with cancer. Ginny’s feisty personality fared well in her tough fight, allowing her to never give up hope and continue looking forward positively. She proclaimed that the “fight was worth it.”
Ginny was born September 5, 1951 in Akron, the daughter of the late Richard Carl and Cleo Irene (Curtis) Aikey. She was a 1969 graduate of East High School in Akron and lived in Akron the majority of her life before moving to Shelby in 2006 with her husband, Bob. Ginny was never one to be idle and was always keeping busy. In Akron, Ginny was a member of the Elva Chapter #304 Order of the Eastern Star where she was a Past Worthy Matron. In Shelby, she was active in several ventures. She was a longtime active volunteer at OhioHealth Shelby Hospital where she worked at the front desk and in the gift shop. She was also active with the Shelby Hospital Guild and currently held the office of Vice President. She enjoyed getting together with her “Curves Girls” and exercising- especially Zumba and Drumming. Ginny was an excellent gardener, had been on several bowling leagues, and enjoyed traveling.
On September 12, 1981 Ginny married Robert C. Dawson and he survives. The most important thing to her was being a mother and grandmother, a job she did well. Her sons and grandchildren survive: Christopher Robert (Melissa) Dawson, and their children, Christopher, Jr. and Nicholas, all of North Canton and Robert Allan (Jessica) Dawson, and their children, Samantha and Kameron, all of Clarksville, TN. Also surviving: a brother and 3 sisters: Richard (Linda) Aikey, Beth Erickson, Joanne (Steve) Hamrick, and Robin Aikey; her mother-in-law: Joyce Dawson; and nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Family and friends are welcome on Thursday, March 15, 2018 from 6-8 pm at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where Eastern Star services will follow at 8 pm. Funeral services will be Friday, March 16, 2018 at 10:30 am at the funeral home with Rev. James Dawson, her brother-in-law, officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shelby Hospital Guild.

Bob and family, We will always remember the fun and laughter we had ..she will surely be missed..Love, Bernie and Sandy
A little piece of my heart stays with Ginny. When I moved to the area and wanted to start teaching Zumba, Ginny was one of my regulars. She welcomed me with open arms and as I grew as a person she follows. When I made a tough decision to go to a new location to teach, she followed. Ginny was so dedicated, she loved coming to classes. She never wanted to sit and was always the one to make faces back at me during class. I can’t express enough how much I will truly miss her in my classes. She will always be remember by me. Her fight and positive outlook was truly an inspiration.
May God bring your family peace during this difficult time.
