Theodore Richard “Ted” Newmeyer
Theodore Richard “Ted” Newmeyer, age 79, of Shelby, died Monday, April 2, 2018 at the Cleveland Clinic after a short unexpected illness.
He was born July 15, 1938 in Centerton, Ohio the son of the late Henry W. and Harmina (Bogema) Newmeyer. He was a member of the Ontario First Church of God. Ted loved to usher, both at the Ontario Church and at First Church of God in Shelby. He also taught Sunday school at Trinity United Methodist Church in Shelby. Ted retired after 42 years of service from General Motors in Mansfield.
Ted was an avid baseball fan and rooted for the Cleveland Indians and the Shelby Whippets. He spent many hours volunteering as the groundskeeper for Shelby Little League and Babe Ruth baseball fields, coaching Little League baseball teams, and coaching Upwards Basketball. Ted touched the lives of many Shelby kids. Ted enjoyed many hobbies including fishing, woodworking, feeding and watching birds, and watching his grandson, Lee, drag race. Ted was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
On December 5, 1958 he married Kay Jean (Livingston) Newmeyer, whom he shared his life with for nearly 60 years, and she survives. Also surviving are a daughter: Jean Ann Newmeyer of Bellefontaine, OH and a son: Timothy (Debbi) Newmeyer of Shelby; a grandson: Lee R. Newmeyer (Morgan Sutter) of Shelby; a sister: Hilda Lee of Fostoria; 2 brothers: Herbert J. “Stick” Newmeyer of Shelby and Dale E. (Phyllis) Newmeyer of Willard; Brothers-in-laws and Sisters-in-laws: Dr. David C. (Bette) Livingston of Norwalk, Mary Lou (Jerry) Stairs of Shelby and Robert L. Smith of Willard.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by 8 siblings: Wilma Baumier, Emma Shetterly, Virginia Smith, Mary Frederick, Harmena Elmer, Julia Ginter, Rose Wadsworth, and Crystal Messersmith.
Family and friends are welcome on Sunday, April 8, 2018 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street Shelby. Funeral services will be Monday, April 9, 2018 at 10 AM at the funeral home. Rev. Jeff Gray and Rev. Larry Collins will officiate. Burial will follow in Ashland Cemetery.
