Teresa B. Hicks

Teresa B. Hicks, age 91, of Crestline, died early Friday morning, October 1, 2021 at Avita Ontario Hospital following a brief and unexpected battle with pneumonia.

Teresa was born December 6, 1929 in Crestline to the late Charles and Bertha (Kempf) Rietschlin. A 1947 graduate of Tiro High School, she was rightfully crowned Miss Tiro that same year. Throughout her life, Teresa worked for several years at UFORMA/Shelby Business Forms and later retired from CPI Photo Finish, located at the Richland Mall, after many years of service. Her two main hobbies included maintaining a healthy lifestyle and caring for her yard and landscaping. Teresa enjoyed walking and was active with Silver Sneakers fitness classes. She adamantly cared for her yard, flowers, and shrubs and loved being outdoors, especially mowing the lawn- that is until “they” made her quit at the age of 90!

Teresa’s husband of 62 years, James H. Hicks, survives. They married May 9, 1959 and, as a gift for their 50th wedding anniversary, were given a gazebo from their family. This gazebo quickly became her pride and joy and time spent in it brought her extreme joy and happiness- as did her family. She adored spending time with them whether that be babysitting grandchildren or attending their sporting activities. Teresa was a voracious reader and was always in attendance at church activities at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church where she was an active member.

In addition to her husband, Teresa is survived by her 8 children: Dianne Shell of New Washington, David Hicks of Crestline, Susan (Allen) Yetzer of Shelby, James (Linda) Hicks, Jr. of Crestline, Joseph (Tammy) Hicks of Hamilton, William Hicks of Orlando, FL, Rebecca Hicks-Concilla of Naples, FL, and Heidi (Brian) Barga of Blacklick; 19 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 13 great great grandchildren; a sister: Charlene Spitan; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to her parents, Teresa was preceded in death by a son-in-law: John Shell; a grandson: Eric Yetzer; and siblings: Leonard Rietschlin, Eugene Rietschlin, Raymond Rietschlin, Pauline Arnholt, and Leona Metzger.

Family and friends are welcome on Monday, October 4, 2021 from 4-7 pm at the Penwell Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 7 pm. Funeral Mass will be on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at 2 pm at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 5742 State Route 61, Shelby. Fr. Jeff Smith will celebrate with burial immediately following in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.

Appropriate ways to express sympathy for those unable to attend may be done by leaving an online condolence on Teresa’s obituary at www.PenwellTurner.com or by leaving a comment on her post on the funeral home’s Facebook page, Facebook.com/PenwellFuneral.
