Sue Carol Lewis

Sue Carol Lewis, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 12, 2024 at the age of 87 at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital’s Inpatient Hospice Unit.

Sue was born on July 3, 1936, in Shelby, Ohio, to the late Russell Laverne and Emma Gertrude (Dick) Apger. A graduate of Shelby High School, Class of 1954, Sue contributed to various places of employment throughout her life, including Struble’s Drug Store and Shelby Autocall, though her primary role was that of a dedicated homemaker and mother.

Sue was a faithful member of Messiah House of Prayer in Shiloh, where she found joy in singing gospel songs and staying connected with her faith community. She had a green thumb and found solace in her flower and vegetable gardens, often sharing the bounty of her labor with others. Sue had a passion for baking, especially for her loved ones, and enjoyed spending time with her family, caring for her grandchildren, and watching professional wrestling on television. She was also known for her love of mowing grass and staying informed with the news.

Sue’s legacy lives on through her devoted children: Carol Akers of Columbus, Steve (Melanie) Lewis of Mansfield, Dan (Jill) Lewis of Johnsville, David (Joyce) Lewis of Johnsville, and daughter-in-law Robyn Lewis of Lexington, KY. She was also cherished by her grandchildren: Tiffany (Cory) Idle, Dustin Akers, Nicole Lewis, Amy (Eric) Fletcher, Matt (Katie) Lewis, Jordan (Greg) Eichorn, Kendra Morrison, Sarah (Joshua) Rivers, Molly (Josh) Mateo, and her 13 great-grandchildren. In addition to her immediate family, Sue is survived by her sister, Charlene Briggs of Shelby.

In addition to her parents, Sue was preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 1/2 years, Jackie Dale Lewis, on June 8, 2007. Jackie and Sue shared the same birthday, just five years apart. Additionally, her son and daughter-in-law: Timothy D. and Kathleen M. Lewis; and her siblings: Janice Donnenworth, Shirley Dewitt, Sandy Burkhart, Dorothy Bailey, Bonnie Apger, Russell Apger Jr., William Apger, Dean Apger, and Harold Apger preceded her in death.

Sue will be remembered for her unwavering love for her family and friends. She touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed.

Family and friends are welcome on Thursday, February 22, 2024 from 10-11:30 am at the Penwell Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby where funeral services will immediately follow at 11:30 am. Rev. John Montgomery, Pastor of Temple of God in Shelby, will officiate the services with burial following in Oakland Cemetery, Shelby. Dear Lewis family, I went to dialysis the same days as Sue. I looked forward to seeing her in the waiting room. We were the “two Sues”. We would sing Christmas carols and gossip. I was able to stop dialysis about a year ago. I have thought of Sue frequently since then. We even sat by each other before I stopped dialysis. We Never made the connection of our families.
Dear Sue, rest in peace and I hope your chair in heaven has the softest, cushiony seat for you.
