Richard G. “Dick” Reed
Richard G. “Dick” Reed, age 78, of Shelby, died Thursday, February 12, 2015 at his home.
He was born May 20, 1936 in Shelby the son of the late Clarence Alvie and Ohma Elma (Waters) Reed. Dick was a 1954 Graduate of Shelby High School, earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Education from Ashland College and received a Master’s Degree in Administration from Bowling Green State University. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War.
Dick began working at AMF in Shelby prior to attending college. After his college graduation he began his teaching career at Shelby City Schools where he taught typing, and record keeping. He was a highly respected teacher and coach – coaching JV and varsity football, basketball and track, serving with coaches Bill Wilkens, Don Monn, Bill Varble, Ron Stepsis, Howard Plocher. He finished a 31 year teaching career as Shelby’s Athletic Director, retiring in 1996.
He was a very active member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Shelby where he was a member of the Vestry, taught Sunday school and was a lay reader. Church was a very important part of his life. He was President of the Shelby Cloverleaf Square Dance Club, was a member of Johnny Appleseed Wood Carvers Club and was Past President of Shelby Senior Center. He was the proud recipient of the Jess Rath Christian Service Award, Charles C.W. Williams Sixth Man Award and was inducted into the Shelby High School Hall of Fame. Dick’s grandchildren brought him great joy and attending their sporting events was his most important hobby.
He is survived by his wife: Judy (Brinson) Reed, whom he wed on December 17, 1960; a daughter:Tally (Bob) Delauder of Shelby; a son: Rick Reed of Westerville; 4 grandchildren: Reed Delauder, Brinson Delauder, McClellan “Ella” Delauder and Delaney Reed; a brother: James Reed of Shelby; 2 sisters-in-law: Elaine Reed of Shelby and Sara (Bill) Gregor of Michigan; a brother-in-law: Robert (Connie) Brinson of Shelby. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister and brother-in-law: Donna and Ira Clabaugh; a brother: Ned Reed; a brother-in-law: Mark Brinson; and a sister-in-law: Mercedes “Mert” Reed.
Friends and family are welcome on Sunday, February 15, 2015 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby where funeral services will be conducted on Monday at 10:30 AM by Father Daniel Orr. Military honors will be conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Shelby. Prayers to the family
Coach Reed was my football coach in high school and one of the main reasons I am where I am today. I was blessed to have him. He always asked about my team.
I was direct when I asked Mr. Reed why my father insisted I take typing. His answer was profound and one I marvel at yet today. He told me that my dad and he both felt that communications modalities would change in the future. Those with typing skills would be much better prepared to handle this in the business world. I later found that Mr. Reed and my dad talked the year prior during conferences.
I have thought many, many times about Mr Reed, as I punched data decks for my computer programs in engineering school to word processing my graduate school papers, and now, starting a writing career.
Mr. Reed was very insightful, but most of all he wanted the best for and out of every student. He accomplished this with ease and grace. This old world will greatly miss the Dick Reed(s) of the world, but I for one have been a much better person for knowing him. God bless you and a job well done.

I remember Mr Reed, he was my typing teacher. He was a wonderful teacher and you could tell he enjoyed teaching and enjoyed his students. We def. could use more teachers like him today. So sorry for your loss. R.I.P Mr Reed and prayers for the family!

I am so very sorry to hear about the passing of your dad. I had a very brief but nice conversation with him and your mom at Aunt Marty’s calling hours. What a beautiful obituary and tribute to your dad. Unfortunately, I can’t make it down for the service, but please know that my thoughts and prayers are with all of you as you celebrate his life and all the lives he touched.

I have known the Reed family since I was a very little girl. They were quality people. Dick was such a kind heart. One of my favorite teachers. For all the surviving family and close friends, I don’t need to say you have lost a mountain of a man , you already know that. May you feel the comfort of having been a part of his legacy.
Such great memories of Mr. Reed. I loved going to his class. I always felt that no matter how many were in the classroom, he was there for me when I needed him.
A few years ago I babysat for his great nephew Sam Reed. So I saw Mr. Reed at Sam’s birthday party. We sat talked for awhile. It was so good to see him and catch up.

As my own father turns 75 this month, I can’t imagine the loss all of you are facing. Any age is to young to die, to lose a spouse, a father, a grandfather. Mr. Reed will always be remembered, by any SHS graduate that knew him, for his wit, his smile and his kind words. I’m sorry for your loss.

My most heartfelt condolences to the Reed family. Life will never be the same for you now without him but know that he lives forever in your hearts. As a man of faith, you can be at peace knowing that he is well and never to suffer again. I live in Indianapolis and don’t get home much but this past fall, after losing my wife from a very long illness, I came home to see family and friends and was privileged to run into him at a football game. We reminisced of the good old days when I played for him in the late 70’s. Coach Reed was one of the finest men/coaches I’ve ever met. He was truly dedicated and passionate about his boys, “athletes.” He taught us to be men and descent human beings. Coach pushed us to always do our best and to hold our heads up in defeat. Dick was a joy to know. He was always positive and encouraging. I loved how he took Star under his wing to teach her round dancing. We enjoyed all the square dance trips we took with the traveling four couples, Ma (Fran) & Pa (Don) Haverfield, you & Dick, Chuck & Barb. Thank you for including us. We especially enjoyed the Hawaii trip and the Little People Skit. We were blessed to have Dick as a friend and club president. May the Lord comfort you at this time. So sorry to hear of Dick’s passing. Always loved to be around him at the Reed family “get togethers” in the ’50’s and ’60’s. Uncle Clarence was so proud of him, as were the rest of “us cousins”. He was my personal football hero, both as a player and a person, while I was growing up in Shelby in the ’50’s. Both my daughters loved Dick as a teacher, coach and AD at SHS in the early 80’s.

Mr. Reed(Coach) was an amazing influence in my life. Dick always had some positive advice to give me when I needed to overcome adversity. As a family friend, neighbor, and church member with the Reed family those times growing up in Shelby were filled with great memories.
I took many qualities from Dick in his approach to coaching and life, in providing many of those attributes within my own children. I am proud to say that I am blessed with having known Mr. Reed and his family.

Please accept our sincere condolences on the loss of Dick Reed. Joan’s dad, Bill Robertson, Sr., worked at the Tuby Hot Mill with Clarence (“Reedy”). She has many fond memories of the Reed family while growing up in the Auburn and Marvin Ave. area. Dick would always stop to say hello and was always ready with a hug. He will be missed a lot.
We are so sorry that we were out of town and couldn’t make Mr. Reeds services. Know what you are going through and wish we could take your pain away! Such a wonderful person! Active in our community, full of integrity, and put God and his family first…..top notch man! He will be missed by many!

Dear Judy, So sorry to hear of the passing of Dick. It seems like yesterday that I saw you both at Ned’s funeral. I also did not know of the passing of your brother Mark. My condolences to you and your family.
