Raymond E. Garrett, Sr.
Raymond E. Garrett, Sr., of Shelby, a loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 16, 2020 at OhioHealth Shelby Hospital at the age of 78.
Raymond was born on September 20, 1941 in Shiloh, Ohio to the late Herman and Mabel (Dreier) Garrett. He was a 1960 graduate of Plymouth High School. After graduation, Ray joined the United States Air Force and was an immensely proud Airman, serving from 1960 to 1964. After his service, Ray returned to Shelby and worked at ArcelorMittal (formally known as Ohio Steel Tube) for 38 years.
In his free time, Ray’s hobbies were not limited to fishing, spending time with his grandkids, playing Sudoku, learning and discussing history, and any good conversation over a cup of coffee at McDonalds with many friends. Until more recent years, Ray attended Sunday services at Trinity United Methodist Church to hear the word of God from former pastor, Rev. Dr. Edna Stahl.
Raymond’s family would like to express sincere gratitude and thanks to Homecare Matters for the exceptional care given to this incredibly special man in their lives. Ray always expressed a special liking to his aides: Tera, Betty, Celeste, Sharon, and Ashley. They would also like to thank Dr. Chawla and his wonderful staff.
Raymond is survived by his wife of 58 years, Diana R. (Vorndran) Garrett, whom he wed on December 1, 1962. Also surviving are his children: Rhonda (Alan) Terhune of Norris, TN and Raymond E. (Pam) Garrett, Jr. of New Washington; 4 grandchildren: Ashley (Ryan) Bradley, Courtney Garrett, Brandon Miller, and Daniel Garrett; 4 great-grandchildren: James Matlock, Nathan Matlock, Nolan Bradley, Harlyn Garrett, and one expected in August: Leighton Garrett; sister: Delores (Roger) Estes of Lima; and special nephew and his wife: Bryan and Stacey Brown, who held a special place in his heart; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by two sisters: Marilyn Shoup and Janice Brown.
Friends and family are welcome on Saturday, June 20, 2020 from 11 am–2 pm at the Penwell Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby. Memorial contributions may be made to Homecare Matters Home Health and Hospice and left in care of the funeral home.

Our deepest sympathy to the whole family!! He had been such a great friend to my daddy for many years and when my daddy passed in 2006 my life was forever changed. Then when Raymond became friends on FB I seen what a great friend he was as he became my friend on FB along with my daughter and my hubby!! I will always always cherish that friendship we had on there!! Fish on Ray in Heaven with my daddy now and please give both my parents a hug and kiss!! I remember how Ray came to Heritage Care Center when I worked there to see his dad. It was not easy for him as he had difficulty getting around but he came often and his grandson came and played the piano also.
Enjoyed talking to Ray on the phone different times as he was one of our Indoor Friends at Trinity UMC. My thoughts and prayers with all the family.
