Matthew D. “Matt” Slone

Matthew D. “Matt” Slone, age 47, of Mansfield, died Friday, October 31, 2014 at the Cleveland Clinic after a brief illness. Following Matt’s weakened whisper “I saw God” during his ten day stay at the Clinic, we believe he went home to his Heavenly Father Friday morning.

Matt was welcomed into the world by his parents Douglas and Sandy (Jackson) Slone on September 15, 1967 in Shelby, Ohio.   As a boy he and his father were involved in Boy Scouts together.  He was a graduate of Crestview High School where he played football for the Crestview Cougars.  After high school he played semi pro football for a local Mansfield team, the Mansfield Marauders.  Matt enjoyed coaching Little League and youth football with his sons.  Later he and his sons enjoyed adult Go-Cart racing together at the track.  He was an avid sports fan with his favorites being the San Francisco 49ers, college Michigan Wolverines and NASCAR especially Jeff Gordon.   Matt’s love for the solitude of fishing along the side of the lakes gave him much pleasure.

Matt was employed with the Ohio Department of Transportation District 3 in the Mansfield garage.   He worked for ODOT for over twenty-seven years.

Matt is survived by: his parents Douglas and Sandy Slone of Manfield; his beloved girlfriend: Kelee Robinson of Mansfield, who stood by him during his illness; two sons: Derrick (fiancée Morgan Bandy Swartz) Slone and PFC Erick (Amber) Slone both of Mansfield; a sister: Lora (Charlie) Kuhn of Shelby; a nephew: Robby  (fiancée Kasii McLaughlin) Kuhn; a niece Leesha Kuhn: aunts, uncles and cousins.   He was preceded in death by: his paternal grandparents: Canton & Lora Slone; step grandfather: Ben Layne; and maternal grandparents: Arthur & Pauline Jackson.

May God be with all of Matt’s family and friends during this time of sadness. Knowing Matt all his life I smile when I think about all the times we played together growing up, Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners and our times together in KY with grandparents shooting firecrackers off the front porch. Matt had one of the kindest hearts I’ve ever known, a gentle smile and warm laugh. It’s tough knowing you won’t be around anymore but also know you are in a better place. Rest in peace Couz, you will always hold a special place in our hearts.
