Larry Allen West, Sr.
Larry Allen West, Sr., age 81, of Mansfield, Ohio passed away peacefully in his home Saturday night, October 14, 2023.
Larry was born April 6, 1942 in Roseburg, Oregon to Lawrence and Alice (Thompson) West. He is survived by his children: Ramona Klingman of Louisiana, Hanh Le of Maryland, David (Michelle) West of Ohio, Sheila (Mark) Smith, and Larry West Jr both of Oregon. He had twelve grandchildren and six great grandchildren- with a seventh great grandchild due in January. Larry loved his children dearly and was blessed to speak with all five of them before his passing. This brought him much joy. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and an infant son, Everett West.
Larry served 21 years in the United States Army- completing 3 tours of Vietnam. He retired as a Master Sergeant in 1980. Following his honorable service in the Army, Larry worked as a skycap at the airport in Portland, Oregon.
Larry enjoyed motorcycles, having owned 67 bikes throughout his life, and loved his Dallas Cowboys football. Larry also enjoyed the outdoors- walking while he was able and watching the deer in the backyard and the hummingbirds at the feeder outside his window.
Larry most recently attended Avenue Church on Park Avenue West in Mansfield. He enjoyed reading the Word of God and found much peace and comfort in scripture until his last breath. Though Alzheimer’s robbed him of many physical capabilities, it never took the love of God from his spirit. Romans 8:38-39 NIV [38] For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, [39] neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Larry’s favorite scriptures included: Philippians 4:13, Psalm 91, Psalm 16:5-9, Matthew 5, and Acts 2.
Larry will be laid to rest with his brothers in arms at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Seville, Ohio at a private graveside service on Thursday, October 19, 2023. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to local resources of your choosing which helps veterans.
