Jane Veronica Metzger

Jane Veronica Metzger, 88, died on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at Crestwood Care Center, Shelby, OH.
A lifelong resident of Shelby Settlement, she was the first child born to Howard and Agnes (Stine) Finnegan on October 8, 1924. She graduated in 1942 from Shelby Senior High School. In 1947 she married Hubert Metzger, who preceded her in death in April, 1999. Together they operated Metzger’s Family Restaurant in Crestline. They lived together for 52 years in the home they built during their engagement, only the second home she had lived in her entire life.
Jane was a woman of many talents. She was an accomplished seamstress, an award-winning flower arranger, enjoyed golfing, and was a voracious reader. She loved flowers and had a green thumb, which she passed on to her children. Jane was a proud volunteer of Kingwood Center and was a member of the Crestline Patio Gardener Club. She had a beautiful soprano voice and sang many years in the choir at Sacred Heart Church, a parish where she was a lifelong member. Jane was a member of the Daughters of Isabella and the Altar and Rosary Society.
She was truly the matriarch of her large family and loved to be involved in the lives of her children and grandchildren. Each year for 64 years she insisted on a family picture being taken and sent out as the annual Metzger Christmas card.
Jane was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her sister Mary Gaynor, and her brother Patrick Finnegan. She is survived by her eight children: Msgr. Dennis Metzger of Sylvania, OH, Al (Carmen) Metzger of Plymouth, MI, Patty (John) Warring of Valparaiso, IN, Dave (Cindy) Metzger of Mansfield, Debby (Jerry) Schumacher of Shelby, Karen (Dennis) Weber of Montgomery, AL, Marianne (Charlie) Hutson of Milford Center, OH, and Tom (Diane) Metzger of Crestline. She had 21 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother James Finnegan of Shelby and her sister Bridget (Dan) Kuhns of Taiwan.
Visitation will begin at 3 PM on Friday, April 5 at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, concluding with a Scripture service at 8 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 11 AM at Sacred Heart Church, 5750 State Route 61 South, Shelby. Her son, Msgr. Dennis Metzger will officiate and burial will follow in the church cemetery. In spite of Jane’s great love of flowers, her family requests that memorials be made in the form of contributions to Sacred Heart Church (Bethlehem).

Fr. Metzger, Debbie and all,
I was saddened to hear about the death of your mother, Jane. All of you are a great testament to her devotion to God and Family. She had a great personality and love of life and she was a vibrant woman. In time, her memories will bring you great comfort and joy. God Bless all of you. LuAnn Tafelski & family.
To my dear cousins: Aunt Jane was an inspiration to me. She was able to do it all, and very well, I may add. Family, Faith, Art, Literature and Music, she excelled at everything she chose to do. Smart, smart-alecky and talented, that’s how I will remember my Aunt. But best of all, I’ll always remember her voice when she said our shared name, Ja-aaaaaane!
Love to you all,
Jane Veronica the 2nd…
PS… Sorry, Dennis but we now have some heavy-hitters in Heaven and they’re tilting the Season our way: The Tribe WILL win it all!
