Penwell Turner Funeral Home - Shelby, Ohio

James Michael “Mike” Hale

James Michael “Mike” Hale, age 35, of Shelby, died Saturday, May 6, 2023 at Select Medical in Columbus with his wife and daughter by his side. Although Mike fought a long hard road with various health issues throughout his life, he consistently pushed and battled until the very end.

Mike was born September 30, 1987 in Shelby to James Darrel and Tammy Susan (Dawson) Hale. Mike was a member of the Shelby High School Class of 2007 and had taken several college courses online. He worked for various companies throughout his life when his health permitted, including being a welder for several years and working for Pepperidge Farm in Willard.

Mike’s hobbies were numerous with, aside from family, his greatest love being music. A “metal head” through and through, his favorite bands were Tool, Puscifer, and A Perfect Circle while also enjoying numerous other genres such as Dean Martin, 50s, classic rock, and many others. Playing his guitar brought him peace and he also was in the band Blackened Dawn. A true “night owl”, Mike often stayed up watching his favorite horror movies or tv shows. On the same theme, his podcast with friend, Johnathan, called “CBUS Paranormal” focused on various haunted buildings and sites. Mike enjoyed being in nature, whether that be fishing or going for a hike, and loved to tinker in his garage. Although he was ornery, a constant practical joker, and was known to prank/scare people, his kindness was obvious through his love for family, especially his daughter, Chloe, who was the love of his life and could do no wrong.

Mike is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Rose “Liz” (Kingman) Hale- high school sweethearts who rekindled their love 10 years later and married December 10, 2014. Also surviving are his children: Isaac Porter and Chloe Hale; parents: Darrel and Tammy; brothers: Nicholas Codey (Kaila) Hale and Gregory Allen Hale both of Shelby; nieces and nephews: Willow, Roxanne, Theodore, and Elijah; paternal grandmother: Sue Bolen; mother and father-in-law: Margaret and Scott Shepherd; brothers and sister-in-law: Matthew Kingman, Sammy Kingman, and Shameria Kingman and their families; aunts and uncles: Keith (Karen) Dawson, Kathy (Todd) Brown, Barry (Lisa) Dawson, Timmy (April) Dawson, and Steve (Jessica) Bolen and their families; best friends: Johnathan Robson and Spencer Shepherd; and numerous other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his maternal papaw and mamaw: Eugene and Judy Dawson; paternal grandfather: James I. Hale; aunt: Teresa Hale; and brother-in-law: Johnathan Kingman.

Family and friends are welcome on Thursday, May 11, 2023 from 5-8 pm at the Penwell Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby where funeral services will be held on Friday, May 12, 2023 at 11 am.
