James C. “J.C.” Viars

James C. “J.C.” Viars, age 82, of Mansfield, died Monday, August 24, 2020 at Avita Hospital in Ontario.

J.C. was born on May 23, 1938 in Soldier, KY to the late Taylor and Marie (Cundiff) Viars. He was a milkman for Fleming’s Dairy in Utica, worked for Chattanooga Glass in Mt. Vernon, and retired from Copperweld in Shelby after 31 years. J.C. was a member of the Shelby Masonic Lodge #350 F&AM. Together with his friends and family, he enjoyed gambling at the casino, playing golf, hunting, and fishing. J.C. was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and will be missed by many.

On April 3, 1995 J.C. married Anita (Whited) Viars and she survives. Also surviving are 5 children: Kathy (Doug) Justice of Galion, Suzie Viars of Shelby, Jeff (Tina) Viars of Lexington, Steve Viars of Belleville, and Mike (fiancé Jennifer Stacy) Viars of Mansfield; 3 step-daughters: Jill (Art) Stum of Mansfield, Tabitha Landin of Galion, and Jaime (fiancé Justin Webster) Kizer of Bucyrus; 25 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 3 siblings: Vaughn Viars of Morehead, KY, Phyllis Viars of Ontario, and Madge McBroom of Bellevue; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to his parents, J.C. is preceded in death by his first wife, Muriel (Horne) Viars in 1988; 2 grandchildren: Rachel Viars and Colton Viars; step-daughter: Teresa Johnson; and siblings: Joyce Kimmet, Mabel Viars, Kern Viars, Beardy Viars, and Wanda Knapp.

Family and friends are welcome on Thursday, August 27, 2020 from 4-7 pm at the Penwell Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where funeral services will be held on Friday, August 28, 2020 at 10:30 am. Rev. Benjamin Patrick will officiate and burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery in New Haven. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society and left in care of the funeral home.

Due to the current COVID-19 circumstances, both the family and the funeral home wish that everyone remains safe. Therefore, we ask that visitors be mindful of current restrictions and pay respects appropriately and promptly, without linger.

    JC was a great neighbor, when he wasn’t stealing my tomatoes or arguing with my wife , Jodi.
    Seriously, I will miss him greatly. He has helped me out many times through the last 27 years.
    I got to see him tease and argue with a lot of people. His way of showing affection, I think.
