James C. Crum
James C. Crum, age 91, of Shelby, died Tuesday morning, March 1, 2022 at his home.
Jim was born August 26, 1930 in Shelby to the late Waldo E. and Ruby (Wagner) Crum and was a 1948 graduate of Shelby High School. He began his work at Wilkens Air Force Depot in Shelby, transferred to Gentile Air Force Base in Dayton, then, ultimately, to Newark Air Force Base in 1962 from where he would spend his career and retire. Although his working career was spent at various Air Force Bases, he was raised on a dairy farm, Roselawn Dairy, in Shelby, became a farmer in his early life, and was always proud of his farming heritage.
A talented antique restorer and collector, Jim, together with his late wife, Janice, brought antique pieces back to their original beauty. Janice’s painting skills paired well with Jim’s restorations. He also loved collecting various Indian relics. Jim was a great storyteller with an incredible memory of his life events and would never turn down a good game of cards, especially with his grandchildren.
Surviving are his 3 sons: John D. (Connie) Crum of Greeley, CO, Daniel A. (Deborah) Crum of Shelby, and Paul F. Crum (Deb Kuhn) of Green Bay, WI; 7 grandchildren: Jenny, Amanda, Kristina, Brian, Amy, Phillip, and Olivia; 10 great grandchildren with one more on the way; 2 sisters: Joyce Strohminger of Centerburg and Beth Harruff of Mansfield; and numerous other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Janice M. (Fout) Crum, on February 19, 2019, and an infant sister, Ruth Ann Crum in 1931.
Family and friends are welcome on Saturday, March 5, 2022 from 10 am -12 noon at the Penwell Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where funeral services will immediately follow at 12 noon. Pastor Rus Yoak will officiate the services with burial following in Oakland Cemetery in Shelby. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Lutheran Church, 33 Broadway Street, Shelby, Ohio 44875.

I’m so sorry for your families loss. I enjoyed taking care of Mrs. Crum at Crestwood as her nurse and I remember Mr Crum as a nice caring and loving husband to Mrs. Crum and he was always a nice gentleman to talk too! I’m glad we crossed paths and I pray for your family to have peace and enjoy the memories you’ve made in the past years.

I am so sorry for your loss. A long life lived is certainly a blessing. Dad, David Crum passed in January this year at 91. Dad spoke highly of his cousin Jim and told great stories of the early years. I have indelible memories of visiting the homestead, seeing the covered wagon and meeting family. I truly enjoyed learning about the early settlement of Moses Crum and family. Hopefully these memories along with many others will ease your sorrow and continue the Crum heritage in Shelby. Dan, my condolences to your family. I did not realize how close in age your dad was to his cousin, Dave, my husband. I remember a couple lovely visits to your farm with Jeanne and Tom. Dave, who passed away two months ago, shared numerous stories about the fun he and Jim had as kids. My thoughts are with you.
Your Dad and Mother both were friends for many years. They were both delightful. She had helped me teach painting classes when I had my studio and also in beginning the Local Chapter of Decorative Artists in the late 70’s. I use to run in to them both on my trips back to Ohio. May your memories give you comfort. Sincere sympathy to all the family.

He made card holders for my late husband, which was so thoughtful. Dr. Phillip will now have them. Share your memories and know that “Dad” is at peace.

Dear Paul (Dan and John),
Some of the best years of our life were spent at 220 Rugg Avenues as next door neighbors of Jim and Janice. The memories abound, especially recollections of your dad’s workshop and your mom’s cooking. Two young boys were greatly influenced by you, your mom and dad. Rob and Ryan still talk about the neighbors on the other side of the fence. Our sincere condolences on your loss and may your memories sustain you.
fyi…Paul, Santa’s glasses (which were left on the hearth) appear every Christmas season. The story of “Santa’s visit” is retold year after year. It is a memory to be treasured.
My thoughts and prayers are with your family. I grew up on Rugg Ave. Jim and Fran Kalas were my parents. They were friends with your parents. I loved going to your parents house and exploring while your mom did alterations for my dance costumes. Your parents were both very sweet and talented people. I have a my grandmother’s pie cabinet in my kitchen that my mom started refinishing and your dad finished. I also have my grandmother’s antique dresser in my room that your dad refinished.
My brother and I delivered newspapers to your parents for years. They were always kind and pleasant to talk to. They always gave good halloween candy too! It was a pleasure having your family as our neighbors!

I grew up beside your parents on Rugg Ave. Newark! What wonderful memories of them, was blessed to know your family. I made a shirt in school and put the sleeves in upside down so your mother fixed the blouse and i got a A on it. We all played in the middle of our yards.
