Ira J. Clabaugh, age 76, of St. Rt. 61 South, Shelby, died Wednesday, November 13, 2002 at the Crestwood Care Center after an extended illness.
He was born January 23, 1926 in Shelby, the son of the late Ira A. and Estella (Barkman) Clabaugh. Ira was a 1944 graduate of Shelby High School, and was a former employee of the Shelby Cycle Co. and AMF in Shelby. He had owned and operated C & T Laundromat in Shelby for 28 years and had been a school bus driver for Shelby City Schools for 13 years. He attended Trinity United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Shelby Cloverleaf Western Square Dance Club. Ira was a Navy veteran of WWII and was a lifetime member of Shelby American Legion O’Brien Post #326. He and his wife, Donna, traveled extensively. Ira was a great storyteller and had a quick wit and sense of humor that will be missed.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Mae (Reed) Clabaugh, whom he wed on June 22, 1947; 3 daughters and sons-in-law, Jana and Tim Sampson of Tomball, TX, Lola and Alan Cline of Mansfield, Viki and Bob Deruy of Shelby; 6 grandchildren who’s lives he enjoyed being a part of, Shane Sampson, Sarah Sampson, Casey Cline, Addie Cline, Cari Deruy, and Keli Deruy; a brother and sister-in-law, Bud and Alice Clabaugh of Virginia; 3 sisters and brother-in-law, Mary Durbin of Mansfield, Gladys and Cleo Taylor of Mansfield, and Fern Sweet of Shelby. He was preceded in death by a sister, Sarah McKean and a brother, John Clabaugh.
Calling hours will be on Friday, November 15, 2002 from 5-8 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, and from 9:30-10:30 AM on Saturday at the funeral home. Funeral service will be Saturday at 10:30 AM with Rev. Malcolm Brook and Rev. Dave Carter, officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Shelby with military honors conducted by the Shelby American Legion. Memorial expressions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
