Harold E. Daup
Harold E. Daup, age 91, of Ontario, passed away Sunday, December 10, 2017 at Brethren Care Village in Ashland.
He was born November 25, 1926, in Blooming Grove Township, Richland County, Ohio to the late Ralph and Josephine (Tullis) Daup and graduated from Shiloh High School in 1944.
Harold started his undergraduate studies at Otterbein College in June 1944 where he participated in the men’s glee club and the choir and was on the football team, basketball team and baseball team. He left Otterbein in 1946 to enlist in the U.S. Army and received an Honorable Discharge in March 1948 after serving a year in Italy with the 88th Infantry Division during the period of occupation of World War II.
After leaving the service, Harold worked for the Hollywood Dairy in Shelby and the Wilkens Air Force Depot while completing his college education at Ashland College in 1952.
He was employed as a teacher and coach by the Shiloh Local School District and became the building principal in 1957. He served in that capacity after the Shiloh and Plymouth Local Schools merged while continuing to serve as the varsity basketball coach and athletic director. While in Shiloh, Harold served on the Boy Scout Council and started the Shiloh Little League Baseball program.
In 1961, Harold was chosen as the local Superintendent of the newly combined Union and Savannah Local Schools, which in 1964 became the Crestview Local School District. He served the Crestview School District as Superintendent for eleven years until selected as Superintendent of the Richland County Schools in 1972. While at Crestview, he was one of the founders of the Pioneer Joint Vocational School. When serving as County Superintendent, his office expanded the educational services for the seven local school districts as well as providing some special contract services to some of the surrounding school districts.
In 1977, Harold was chosen by fellow school superintendents as President Elect of the Buckeye Association of School Administrators and served as President for the 1978-79 school year term of office. Harold retired as Superintendent of the Richland County Schools in January 1984.
In 1985, Harold was asked to work for Ashland University and served as the Director of the Educational Administration program until retiring from the University in 1996.
In 1988-89, he was awarded the Outstanding Scholarship Recognition by Ashland University; in 1996, the Distinguished Service Award in recognition for outstanding service to public education in Ohio by the Buckeye Association of School Administrators; and in 1999 an award for Distinguished Service to Ashland University.
Harold served his Methodist Church in Shiloh and in later years the First United Methodist Church on the Square in Mansfield as trustee, as well as several other committees for a number of years.
A devoted family man, he loved his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and enjoyed their many and varied activities. He was a loyal fan of the Cleveland Indians and the Ohio State Buckeyes and enjoyed playing cards, golf, travel, reading and attending musicals.
Harold is survived by his children: daughter: Barbara Ruckman of Ontario, son: Jon of Columbus, son: Jacque (Patti) of Ashland; and daughter: Cynthia (Roy) Pullum of Medina; grandchildren: Laura Ruckman, Jeff Daup, Amber Skelton, Michelle Main, Tiffany Perry, Nathan Pullum, Katie Nguyen and Tiana Repp; as well as thirteen great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years in 2011, Betty (Seaman), his parents: Ralph and Josephine Daup; a sister: Doris Harnly; a brother-in-law: Wallace Harnly; a brother: Ellsworth Daup; a sister-in-law: Kathleen Daup; three nephews: Craig Harnly, James, and Douglas Daup; and a niece: Wallis Ann Harnly Gillam.
Family and friends are welcome on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 from 5-7 pm at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby. Funeral services will be on Thursday, December 14, 2017 at 11 am at the Jack and Deb Miller Chapel on Ashland University’s Campus, 527 College Avenue, Ashland, Ohio 44805, with visitation one hour prior to the service from 10-11 am. Rev. W. Kent Joy will officiate and burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Shiloh. Military honors will be provided by the Ashland County Honor Guard.

An amazing man, educator, frìend. The one element missing in his obit is what a caring, helping, understanding “boss” he was with wonderful humor. He was my “Lou Grant.” He helped to shape my life. I loved him deeply and he will be missed and I will be forever indebted to him for “the chance.”
Sorry to learn about the passing of Harold Daup. He was a wonderful person and good friend. He will be missed by many school sports people as well as the community. He is in the arms of God now and is at peace. R I P Mr. Harold Daup.

Harold was a true friend & a special mentor to me , I can not express what he meant with his leadership to many people . Just an outanding , sincere individual , so glad he was a friend to me.

The Daup family is a very caring devoted family. I didn’t know Mr. Daup very well but I seen his family quit a bit at Brethren Care Village. Mr. Daup’s dedication to his family showed in getting to know his family and seeing there love and dedication to him. Your will remain in my thoughts and prayers.
Deepest sympathy to family and friends on this sad news. Mr. Daup offered me my first job ever after graduating from college. Even though I didn’t take it, I will always be grateful to him for his consideration. Knowing the family over the year and being a good friend of his son Jon and his daughter Barb, my thoughts and prayers are with them and the family.

Many memories of Harold when he was coach at Shiloh, even though I was from Union. My mother was on school board at Crestview when he was superintendent. Harold was an outstanding person in the community.
