Georgia Christine (Hewitt) Gwirtz

Georgia Christine (Hewitt) Gwirtz, age 88, found rest and peace on December 7, 2018. She passed away at Willow Brook Christian Home in Columbus, Ohio.  She was born December 20, 1929 in Shelby, Ohio.

Georgia enjoyed collecting recipes and cook books and trying new recipes. She also worked extensively on her family’s genealogy. At a time before the internet, she traveled to courthouses, historical societies, and interviewed distant family members to research her family history. Georgia was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed photography.

Throughout her life she always had an interest in learning something new, which continued until her passing. She never met a stranger, frequently engaging others in conversations in any setting.

She lived in Shelby her entire life and attended Shelby schools, graduating from Shelby High School in 1948. Georgia was employed by Shelby Mutual Insurance Company for many years.

On August 24, 1949 she married Robert H. Gwirtz and together they raised their family in Shelby.

Georgia is survived by her husband, Robert H. “Bob” Gwirtz, her husband of 69 years; her daughters: Sally (Larry) Steward of Columbus, Ohio and Marlene (Pat) Wears of Groveport, Ohio; 2 granddaughters: Amanda Steward and Anne Barrett; and 4 great grandchildren: Campbell, Emerson, Addison, and Kennedy.

She is preceded in death by her parents: Delbert D. Hewitt and Carrie G. (Crow) Steele; 2 brothers: Herbert E. Hewitt and Verlin G. Hewitt; and a niece: Susan (Hewitt) Jones.

The family wishes to thank all who provided such loving care to Georgia. The staff at Willow Brook Christian Home and Heartland Hospice softened Georgia’s transition to a better life.

Family and friends are welcome on Tuesday, December 11, 2018 from 11 am-12 noon at the PENWELL TURNER FUNERAL HOME, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where a brief service will immediately follow at 12 noon. Rev. Dr. Rich Rader will officiate the services and burial will follow in Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice, 6500 Busch Blvd., Suite 210, Columbus, Ohio 43229.

    Prayers Uncle Bob she loved you so much! Thank you for being there and taking her to get hair done. I could talk to you both for hours. Prayers to you Marlene n Sally n families. Friends she has many. Without you Aunt Georgia by my side thru Dads death Aunt Fern, Uncle Jack list goes on. I couldn’t have made it thru, you rejoice with them now. You’re with your whole family now. Love you so so much and I’ll have my memories always.

    I am so sorry for your loss. It has been years but I often thought of Georgia and you. I have many fond memories of those times. I lost Herb five years ago and still miss him so much. BUT life goes on,. Again, my sympathy to you and your family. Veronica Ha
