Dorothy M. Chew

Dorothy M. Chew, age 86, of Shelby, died late Wednesday night, March 8, 2023 at Galion Pointe.

Dorothy was born January 22, 1937 in Tiro to the late Raymond and Irene C. (Kurtzman) Whisler. A 1955 graduate of Shelby High School, Dorothy stayed connected with many classmates throughout her life and fondly enjoyed time spent with the “55 Club”. She has been employed at Shelby Sales Book prior to a career as a cafeteria worker for Shelby City Schools, primarily at Shelby Middle School, from where she retired.

Dorothy was an active member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church and its Altar and Rosary Society and volunteered her time at numerous church and St. Mary School functions. She could almost always be found at the dessert table serving up tasty treats. She loved going to Shelby Whippet volleyball and boys and girls basketball games and also enjoyed watching the Cleveland Indians and Cavaliers. Incredibly social, Dorothy stayed active with many community events and functions and enjoyed breakfasts and lunches with friends. She especially enjoyed following her grandchildren in all of their activities.

Surviving are two sons: Rich (Jennifer) Chew and Michael Chew both of Shelby; grandchildren: Natasha (Donnie) Ostrander, Cole Chew, Allison Chew, and Keelynn Statts; great grandchildren: Mersades (Dalton) Hoeflich, Landyn Ostrander, and Myla Ostrander; great great grandchild: Remington Hoeflich and soon-to-be: Oaklynn Hoeflich; sisters: Florence Schneider and Mary (Dave) Metzger; sister-in-law: Jann Chew; and nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Robert N. Chew, who preceded her in death on October 16, 2014.

Family and friends are welcome on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 from 9:30-10:30 am at the Penwell Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby. Dorothy’s Funeral Mass will follow calling hours at 11 am at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 29 West Street, Shelby, with Fr. Chris Mileski officiating.
