Donald D. Young

Donald D. Young, age 78, of Bellevue, Ohio died tragically, Thursday, May 9, 2013 in an automobile accident in Marion County, Ohio.

Don was born December 27, 1934 in Fort Wayne, IN to the late Fremont and Hazel (Dager) Young. A 1952 graduate of Elmhurst High School, he served as a corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict as a tank gunner, after which he attended Indiana University International Business College in Fort Wayne. He was then employed at the Wayne Knitting Mills and the Magnavox Company for whom he transferred to Madison, Ohio in 1969 and to Shelby in 1973. He was also employed as a sales manager for the Carton Service Company, Towmotor, Don Coburn in Ashland, and Tappan in Mansfield. He retired in January 2005 from MTD in Willard.

Don most recently resided in the Mary Lay Home at the Sorrowful Mother Shrine in Bellevue where he served in several church ministries and took pride in maintaining and beautifying the Shrine grounds. He loved fishing and sports, especially watching his children and grandchildren participate. Don served as an usher and lay distributor for many years for the Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Shelby and also served as president of the St. Mary’s School Board. He was also a member of the Red Cross Board in Shelby.

Don is survived by his wife, Sandra (Girardot) Young, of Shelby; three sons, three daughters, and 13 grandchildren: Christopher (Joan) Young of Blacklick, Ohio and children, Elizabeth, Audrey, and Abby; Carter (Carrie) Young of Westerville, Ohio and children, Matt and Nick; Scott (Traci) Young of Valparaiso, Indiana and children, Keenan and Cydney; Karen (Randy) Hay of Bellevue, Ohio and children, Daniel and Shana; Amy (Tim) Strauss of Macedonia, Ohio and children, Logan and Lauren; Linda Young of Shelby and children Maggie and Hayden Gray. Survivors also include a sister, Ruth Kurtz of Crystal Lake, Illinois, a sister-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Friends are welcome on Monday, May 13, 2013 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM where a rosary service will be recited at 7:45 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, and also on Tuesday from 9:30-10:30 AM at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday at 11 AM at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Shelby with Fr. Gene Wilson, C.PP.S. celebrating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Diabetes Association or the Sorrowful Mother Shrine.

    Our most deepest sympathy to the immediate family…..

    We will always remember Don as a caring and compassionate person. We could go for a long time without seeing Don and he would come up and start a conversation and make us feel as if we were just chatting with him yesterday. We are sure he was that way with everyone he knew!!!

    It hurts to know that he will be missed most as a Father and Grandfather. Keep those special moments close to you heart and know that all of you are in our prayers.
