Dean M. Artz, age 87, of Mansfield, died Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at the Crestwood Care Center in Shelby.

Dean was born March 27, 1930 in Shelby, the son of the late Ivan J. and Gladys N. (Miller) Artz. He was a 1948 graduate of Shelby Senior High School. Dean was a hard worker his entire life. He and his father operated Artz Custom Slaughtering on Plymouth Springmill Road for many years, as well as farmed. Following that, Dean began a career with the United States Postal Service as a postal carrier for 31 years until his retirement in 1985. However, retirement did not slow Dean down. He became an associate with Bloom and Johnson Auto Sales and Body Shop in 1987, had been a title runner/courier for Rocket Chevrolet Olds in Shelby, was an associate of the Turner Funeral Home, and, until recently, was a hearse driver for local funeral homes with Buckeye Vault and Livery.

Dean and his wife, Grace, faithfully delivered Meals on Wheels from 1987-2014. He was a member of Branch 118 of the National Association of Letter Carriers and was a former member of the Union Grange. Dean attended Richland Church of the Brethren in Mansfield.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Evelyn Grace (Hollenbaugh) Artz, whom he wed on Christmas Eve, 1950. Also surviving are: 3 children: Lora (James) Wiedmayer of Saline, Michigan, Jerry (Adrienne) Artz of Gainesville, FL, and Jim Artz of Shelby; 6 grandchildren, 6 step grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and 10 step great grandchildren; a sister: Nancy (Charlie) Lantz of Wooster; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and numerous friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: a son: Brian Richard Artz in 1959; and 2 daughters in law: Kathy Artz in 1995 and Linda Artz in 2014.

At Dean’s request, there will be no calling hours. Graveside services at Little London Cemetery will be announced at a later date. Care for Dean and his family is being provided by Bob, Catherine, and Jake at the Turner Funeral Home in Shelby. Memorial contributions may be made to Richland Church of the Brethren, 786 Linn Road, Mansfield, Ohio 44903 or Hospice of North Central Ohio, 1050 Dauch Drive, Ashland, Ohio 44805.

Dear Lori and Jim and family,

I was so sadden to hear of the passing of your father and truly in shock, it was not too long ago that I had run into him and your mom at Details, in two occasions and sat and had very long conversations with them we sat and talked for quite sometime. A wonderful man, and your mom is delightful as well, I had no idea any could have been wrong, at the time we laughed and just had a wonderful wonderful time. Those now will always be a memory for me– just cherish those. My blessings and prayers to you all during this time.. God Bless.

I met Grace and Dean back in the late 1980’s….in the “spare time” that they had, they were drivers for car dealerships…they always were so nice and friendly, and very full of energy. Through the years we have kept in touch, and am so very sorry to hear of Deans passing. I still have a picture of them that they gave me of the two of them last year at Christmas hanging on the wall in my office. I always think of them together…and always with a smile.
