Darrell R. Porter

Darrell R. Porter, age 64, of Shelby, died Monday, October 20, 2014 at OhioHealth MedCentral Shelby Hospital after a short illness.

He was born February 13, 1950 in Genoa, West Virginia, the son of the late Dewey and Ruth (Wilson) Porter. Darrell was a 1968 graduate of Shelby High School and was an eight year veteran of the United States Navy serving during the Vietnam War as a radio operator. After he was honorably discharged from the Navy, Darrell worked as a civilian MP in Dahlgren, VA. In 1985, he and his wife, Marsha, returned to Shelby and he took a job as plant manager at Van Dresser in Norwalk until its closing. Darrell then started as a helper at Shelby Municipal Light Plant where he worked his way up to Superintendent, a position he currently held.

Darrell was a very active Mason. His memberships included: Shelby Lodge #350 F and AM, Shiloh Lodge #544 F and AM, Wooster Ebenezer Lodge #33 F and AM, Shelby Chapter #178 RAM, Mansfield Council #94 R and SM, Mansfield Commandery #21 KT, Black Stone York Rite College where he received the Purple Cross, Ohio Priory #18 of KYCH, Ancient Accepted Scottish Right Valley of Canton, Ancient Accepted Scottish Right Valley of Columbus, Mohican Council #34 AMD, Crawford Knight Masons, Charlemagne Conclave Red Cross of Constantine, where he was the Past Chief, Past Deputy Grand Master, Past Deputy Grand High Priest, Deputy Division Commander, Past DEO for Chapter , Rose Croix line in Canton.

Darrell was a loving and devoted father, grandfather and family man. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. His joking and upbeat personality made him a friend to all.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years Marsha (Edwards) Porter whom he wed on May 15, 1973 . Also surviving are: 4 children: Kenny (Becky) Porter of Shelby, Kimberly Barnes of Shelby, Heath (Jessie) Porter of Shelby, Heather (Scott) Conard of Mansfield; 8 grandchildren: Caleb Porter, Tyler Porter, Randy Edwards, Brooke Barnes, Hollie Barnes, Jaekob Conard, Jillian Conard; 2 great grandchildren: Oliver Porter, Kaiden Barnes; a brother: Keith (Terri) Porter of Norwalk; a sister: Gloria (Kenneth) Phelps of Shelby; mother-in-law: Vera Kovatch of Shelby; 2 sisters-in-law: Ann Porter of Shelby, Rhonda Edwards of Wooster. In addition to his parents, Darrell was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kaitlyn Barnes, and a brother, Richard Porter.

Family and friends are welcome on Friday, October 24, 2014 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, Masonic services will be at 7:45 PM. Funeral services will be on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at 10:30 AM at the funeral home with Rev. Steven Schag officiating. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery in Shelby with military honors conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail.
