Charlotte Jean (Apland) Ortiz

Charlotte Jean (Apland) Ortiz, age 39, of Springfield, Ohio, died Monday, August 12, 2019 at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton after a courageous battle with cancer.

Charlotte was born October 23, 1979 in Banbury, England.  The daughter of Mark Wayne and Jennifer Susan (Reynolds) Apland.  Charlotte was a member of the Greenon High School Class of 1998 where she was active in several things including student government, track, French Honor Society, and varsity cheerleading.  Several months prior to her graduation, Charlotte voluntarily enlisted in the Ohio Air National Guard.  A week following graduation, she entered basic training and eventually went to technical school in Biloxi, Mississippi.   The result of the 9/11 attacks required Charlotte to become active duty where she worked in the Command Post in Springfield.  It was in this role that she found her passion for recruiting.  She spent her career from 2002 until her death working as a recruiter for the Ohio Air National Guard.  Charlotte excelled in her career being promoted to the position of Assistant Recruiting and Retention Superintendent for the Ohio Air National Guard and rose to the rank of Master Sergeant.  She loved her country, serving it well, and always went above and beyond her duties.

Charlotte was an extraordinary and accomplished person, at work and in her personal life.  In December of 1999, she earned her private pilot license.  She earned a Bachelor’s degree from Wright State University in Communications and a Master’s degree in Marketing/Advertising from Columbia Southern University.  She enjoyed volunteering each month at Restoration Park Church (RPC), where she would help feed the less fortunate and assist with clothing drives.   Charlotte was an active member of RPC and was proud to have been recently saved on August 27, 2017.  Her kind demeanor and smile were welcoming to anyone she encountered, and her boisterous personality allowed for all to know her presence.  Simply put, Charlotte was an easy person to love and will be sadly missed.

In the role of mother, wife, daughter, sister, and friend, Charlotte was second to none.  She is survived by her husband: Chief MSGT John Robert Ortiz, whom she wed on April 1, 2006; her daughter: Chloe A. Ortiz; step-daughters: Delani L. Ortiz and Tiernei A. Ortiz; her mother: Jennifer Susan (Reynolds) Apland of Fairborn; 2 brothers: Schuyler Apland of Cincinnati and Jeremy Apland of Seattle, WA; 3 nephews: Ian, Nicholas, and Colin Apland; her in-laws: Franklin J. and Nancy K. Ortiz of Scarbro, WV;  2 uncles: Tony (Diane) Reynolds and Dan (Roxanne) Apland; an aunt:  Carolyn Apland; her godparents: Fred and Jean Nicholls; her loyal dog: Coal; and several other relatives and countless friends.  Her father, Mark Wayne Apland, preceded her in death.

Family and friends are welcome on Friday, August 16, 2019 from 11 am until 1 pm at Restoration Park Church, 55 Restoration Park Drive, Medway, Ohio 45341.  Funeral services will immediately follow at 1 pm with Pastors Randy Warner, Chad Group, and Wes Arblaster co-officiating the services. In honor of Charlotte’s service to our country, full military honors will be conducted at the conclusion of the services at RPC by the Wright Paterson Air Force Base Honor Guard. Burial will be in Dayton National Cemetery.  Jake Penwell and the staff of Penwell Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, Ohio 44875, are honored to serve Charlotte and her family.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Restoration Park Church, 55 Restoration Park Drive, Medway, Ohio, 45341 or to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas, 66675-8516.

To Charlottes family & friends. My heartfelt condolences to you all. Charlotte touched many so many souls around the country. She will truly be missed. Her wit, her humor and her integrity made her such a great person and a passionate recruiter. We met via my working Flying Training at the ANGRC. Charlotte was that person on the phone asking so many great questions. She always wanted to be able to make her officer recruits accessions as smooth as possible. Her enthusiasm was contagious. She really loved her job. To me, Charlotte was a beautiful person and I consider it a blessing to have crossed paths with her on this journey. My thoughts and prayers to all. God Bless.

  32. Jackie Cox says:

I met Charlotte just a couple of years ago when Chloe joined the same Girl Scout troop my granddaughter did. As an assistant leader, I was at almost every meeting – as was Charlotte. She always jumped in to help in any way she could – always with such a warm smile, great sense of humor and common sense. She & Chloe were such assets to our team – they seemed to have as much fun with us as we did with them and we’ve missed that ! It will certainly be hard to live up to Charlotte’s example of such a wonderful, caring human being. As always, our thoughts and prayers are with your family.
