Barbara Jean (Paine) Griffeth
On Monday, Jan. 1, 2018, Barbara Jean (Paine) Griffeth passed away in her home at Wedgewood Estates in Mansfield, surrounded by her family.
Barbara was born on Dec. 25, 1928 in Ashland, Ohio to Carl and Marjorie Ford Paine. She graduated from Shelby High School in 1946, and married James Charles Griffeth on Dec. 24, 1947. Their marriage of 64 years was an example for their children and grandchildren, as well as for all who knew them, of their love and dedication and commitment.
Barbara was a secretary for the Shelby Daily Globe newspaper for many years, and retired from Shelby Printing in 1994, after 14 years of service there. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Shelby, and was an active participant in the United Methodist Women’s group, the Challenger’s Sunday School Class, and the bell choir. Barbara also sang in the adult Chancel Choir and played the piano for the Women’s Sunday School Class. In addition, she assisted with many, many dinners and receptions at the church. Barbara was most recently a member of the First Congregational Church in Mansfield, Ohio.
A truly dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother, Barbara enjoyed spending time attending children and grandchildren’s sporting and musical events, and she also enjoyed bowling, reading, cooking, traveling, and watching the Cleveland Indians baseball games. Family get-togethers always included lots of fun, fellowship, and an enormous amount of food!
Barbara was a very generous and giving person. She always gave of her own time, money, and comfort to others-not only her family-but also to her many friends. Her smile was contagious, and those around her always remarked at her positive outlook and the joy in her eyes.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Jim in 2012, her mother, Marjorie Paine, in 1995, her father, Carl Paine, in 1996, her brother, Lawrence Paine, in 1995, and her granddaughter, Jennifer Fairchild in 2006. She is survived by her three daughters and sons-in-law: Sally and Howard Henderson of Mansfield, Nancy and Fred Fairchild of Galion, Laurie and Scott Hoyda of Shelby, one son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Paula Griffeth of Springfield, Virginia; a sister-in-law, Sally Paine, 14 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Family and Friends are welcome from 4-7 pm on Thursday, January 4, 2018 at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby and on Friday, January 5, 2018 from 10-11 am at the First Congregational Church, 640 Millsboro Road, Mansfield. Funeral services will be at 11 am at the church. Following the funeral service, Barbara’s family will host a light luncheon at the church. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery in Shelby.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Jennifer Fairchild Scholarship Fund to benefit the Raemelton Therapeutic Riding Program, or to the Shelby Helpline Ministries. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Griffeth Family at this time, especially to her daughter Nancy. As a friend of Nancy’s, I know she loved and cared for her mother a great deal. It has been tough the last couple years as her mom’s health has not been good. I extend my deepest sympathy to Nancy and the rest of the family.
