Armin James “A.J.” Oney

Armin James “A.J.” Oney, age 90, of Shelby, died early Tuesday morning, December 6, 2016 at the Crestwood Care Center in Shelby.

A.J. was born July 14, 1926 in Shiloh, Ohio, the son of the late James and Lucy (Cox) Oney. He was a graduate of Plymouth High School and a veteran of the United States Navy serving during World War II. Mr. Oney was employed at Westinghouse in Mansfield from where he retired, had also been employed at FE Myers & Bros. Pumps in Ashland and, for a short time, worked at the Mansfield Reformatory. He also had his own business painting barns and his own taxi business in Ashland and Shelby. Armin was a member of the Shelby American Legion. He loved to play pool and, in his younger years, enjoyed bowling. He also enjoyed taking off in his vehicle for a drive, both short trips and weekend getaways.

Armin is survived by: 5 children: Margie Grieser of Stryker, OH, Marsha (Greg) Martin of Shelby, Marilyn Smith of Shelby, Armin “Jim” (Vicki) Oney, Jr. of Ashland, and Misty (Jeremy) Bornert of PA; 2 granddaughters and 6 grandsons; 14 great grandchildren; 1 great great granddaughter; and several nieces, nephews, others relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: his wife, Mary Louella Oney in 2013; a son-in-law: Mike Smith in 2008; 2 brothers: Junior Paul Oney and Cecil Oney; and an infant sister.

Family and friends are welcome on Friday, December 9, 2016 from 2-3 pm at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where funeral services will be held at 3 pm with Chaplain Randy Barlow of Hospice of North Central Ohio officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail and burial will follow in Little London Cemetery in Shelby. Memorial contributions may be made to Richland County Humane Society or to Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail.

    I was so sorry to read of Jim’s passing….I regret I will not be able to attend the funeral due to I have to work… May God wrap his loving arms around you all in a very special way during difficult time and in the days to come ….Love you .

    AJ was a wonderful friend to my grandfather at Crestwood…when my grandpa was bad, AJ came into his room and said “awe Homer, you dont want to go yet, I have us a pizza ordered”…he was such a sweet man and I will miss seeing him when I visit there. Many sympathies from our family to yours.
