Alice Jean (Pemberton) Hopton

Alice Jean Hopton, age 81, of Shelby, died Monday, June 4, 2018 at the home of her daughter, Carla, in Hammond, Louisiana, where she had resided for the past two years.

Alice was born July 17, 1936 in Hustonville, KY, the daughter of the late Earl Granison and Alma Beatrice (Roberts) Pemberton. She was a graduate of Hustonville High School, where she was valedictorian of her class, and had attended Campbellsville College in KY. Alice worked at Shelby Business Forms and retired from their shipping office from what later became Miami Systems. Alice, with her late husband, Roger, followed Sprint car racing with longtime friend, Benny Bowman. She enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles, loved listening to old hymns, and enjoyed watching Ohio State football, the Cleveland Indians, and Kentucky Wildcats basketball. She loved nature and birdwatching, especially hummingbirds. Alice had also been a Cub Scout Den Mother for Pack 404.

Survivors include her children: Rodney (Dawn) Hopton of Ashland, Lisa Kelble (fiancé, Bill Masterson) of Huron, Ricky (Jan) Hopton of Louisiana, Linda (Billy) Reed of Kentucky, and Carla (Scott) Clabaugh of Louisiana; 10 grandchildren: Lindsay Reed, Tiffany (Josh) Hale, Ashley Neikirk, Zackery (Brooke) Reed, Kyle Hopton, Bryce Hopton, Connor Hopton, Jeanna Hopton, Paxton (Caroline) Clabaugh, and Christine McClester; 13 great grandchildren: Aubrey, Chase, Kyley, Kensley, Zoey, Lane, Jaden, Parker, Myla, Rachel, Michael, Samuel, and Megan; siblings: Martha (Bernie) Schaefer, Beulah Pendergraft, Rose (Glen) Traylor, James Walter (Brenda) Pemberton, June Brown, Marilyn Mills, Carol Jo (Johnny) Reed, Inez (Larry) Goode; and in-laws: Betty Pemberton and Jim Hickman.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death on February 9, 2016 by her husband of 58 years, Roger Carl Hopton, whom she wed on February 8, 1958; a son-in-law: Rich Kelble; and siblings: Ruby Jesse and Earl Van Pemberton.

Family and friends are welcome on Friday, June 8, 2018 from 5-8 pm at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where funeral services will be held on Saturday at 1pm. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Richland County Humane Society or Shelby Helpline Ministries.

    We are so sorry for you loss. Alice was a second mother to me. There are not many of my childhood memories that don’t include her and your family. She and your family were so good to me. It was a great way to grow up with so many great memories. Elaine and I are so sorry we won’t be able to make it to her services, we are out of state on vacation.
