A. LaVerne Borgelt

A. LaVerne Borgelt, age 94, of Crestline, died Tuesday evening, November 24, 2020 in the hospice wing of OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital.

LaVerne was born at home on September 20, 1926 in Columbus Grove, Putnam County, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Erma (Basinger) Schumacher. She was a 1944 graduate of Columbus Grove High School. Following graduation, LaVerne began work as a secretary for Mache Tomato Canning Factory in Defiance where she met and worked with many German war prisoners. Following that, she began work at Westinghouse in Lima where she worked 2nd shift in the Small Motor Division. LaVerne fondly reminisced about her time at Westinghouse where, when the guards went to lunch, she would go to the PA system and would become a “DJ” for the factory. She played music and made announcements over the system for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, etc. and enjoyed bringing joy to the employees.

LaVerne met her husband, Vincent A. Borgelt, a farmer by trade, and they wed on August 26, 1946. It was then when her life began as a wife, homemaker, and mother- all roles she shined in. LaVerne, together with Vince, was a very active member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Bethlehem, Shelby Settlement. For many years she was a lay minister, led Liturgy of the Word and communion services for 17 years, and was a member of both the Altar and Rosary Society and the Daughters of Isabella. For 3 years, LaVerne went to the diaconate program for classes and also had attended many weekend conferences at Notre Dame University which she loved so very much and met people from all over the world.

LaVerne was someone who easily took on the role as “anyone’s grandma”. She was sweet and welcoming and was an excellent storyteller. With Vincent, LaVerne enjoyed traveling to Germany and England where they were able to see the crown jewels, which she directly admitted in her opinion were “quite ugly.” She was a woman who enjoyed many thrills and highlights throughout her life which included, but were not nearly limited to: riding in a hot air balloon with her granddaughter when she was 80, taking a ride with her son in a B-17, motorcycle rides with her son and granddaughter, and traveling with her daughter to Hawaii.

She is survived by her children, her 4 sons: Errol (Susan) Borgelt of Pittsburgh, PA, Randy (Joan) Borgelt of Crestline, Gary Borgelt of Crestline, and Charles (Charlene) Borgelt of Willard; her daughter: Ann (Otis) Manor III of Hoover, AL; 14 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; 8 great great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law: Betty Borgelt. In addition to her parents, LaVerne was preceded in death by her husband, Vincent A. Borgelt, in 2008; an infant son, Michael Vincent Borgelt; and sister: Carla Robenalt.

Family and friends are welcome to attend LaVerne’s funeral mass on Tuesday, December 1, 2020 at 11 am at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 5742 State Route 61, Shelby. The family will greet guests one hour prior to the mass from 10 – 11 am. Fr. Jeff Smith will officiate and burial will follow in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School.
