Wanda J. (Pettit) McKinley
Wanda J. McKinley, age 83, formerly of Mansfield Ave. Shelby, died Sunday, December 28, 2008 at the Crestwood Care Center in Shelby after a short illness.
She was born September 1, 1925 in Shelby the daughter of the late
Bentley and Angeline (Lybarger) Pettit. She was a 1943 graduate of Shelby High School and was a homemaker. Wanda was a member of the First United Church of Christ in Shelby.
Wanda is survived by her daughter and her husband, Darlene and Cliff King of Shelby; 2 grandsons and their wives, Andy and Erin King of Akron, OH, Brian and Danielle King of Waynesburg, OH; a brother, Bentley Pettit, Jr. of Texas; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Hershel D. McKinley in 1990, and by 3 sisters, Lucy Pettit, Laura Glower, and Thelma Strauch.
Friends may call on Tuesday, December 30, 2008 from 5-8 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where funeral services will be conducted at 11 AM Wednesday, December 31, 2008 with Rev. Dr. Rich Rader officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Shelby. Memorials may be made to First United Church of Christ or to the activities fund at Crestwood Care Center. It truly saddens my heart to lose such a wonderful woman from our family at Crestwood. I will be praying for all of you today and in the days ahead. Hold on to all your wonderful memories. Your devotion to her while she was at Crestwood showed the love that she has passed on to all of you. She talked of all of you often it was her favorite subject. She was so proud of each one of you.
I’d like to leave this poem in honor of knowing Wanda. I’m happy that our paths crossed in this life. I’ll be seeing you again my friend.
The Rose Beyond the Wall
Near a shady wall a rose once grew,
Budded and blossomed in God’s free light,
Watered and fed by the morning dew,
Shedding it’s sweetness day and night.
As it grew and blossomed fair and tall,
Slowly rising to loftier height,
It came to a crevice in the wall
Through which there shone a beam of light.
Onward it crept with added strength
With never a thought of fear or pride,
It followed the light through the crevice’s length
And unfolded itself on the other side.
The light, the dew, the broadening view
Were found the same as they were before,
And it lost itself in beauties new,
Breathing it’s fragrance more and more.
Shall claim of death cause us to grieve
And make our courage faint and fall?
Nay! Let us faith and hope receive–
The rose still grows beyond the wall,
