Walter L. Payne
Walter L. Payne, age 86, formerly of 34 Fourth Street in Shelby, died Tuesday evening in Shelby Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 8, 1909 in Shelby the son of George and Lillian (Roth) Payne.
Mr. Payne had been employed at the Shelby Cycle, Wilkens Air Force Depot in Shelby and retired from the Air Traffic Control Office in Oberlin, Ohio.
He was a member of the First Christian Church where he had been a deacon. He was a 60 year member of Shelby Masonic Lodge #350 F.and A.M. and the Royal Arch Masons Chapter #178.
He enjoyed collecting antiques.
Mr. Payne is survived by 3 brothers and sisters-in-law, Edwin and Corrine Payne of Shelby, Herbert and Ann Payne of Shelby, and John and Jean Payne of Rocky River, Ohio; 2 sisters-in-law, Phyllis Payne of Shelby and Ruth Payne of Shelby; 1 brother-in-law, Kenneth Irey of Shelby.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary E. (Fetter) Payne in 1987; and by 2 sisters, Laura Irey and Phyllis Tarvin, and by 6 brothers Ned Payne, Charles Payne, Harold Payne, Myron Payne, Victor Payne, and Roy Payne.
Calling hours will be on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Turner Funeral Home in Shelby, where funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. J. Harold Hopkins, officiating. Masonic services will be conducted on Friday at 8:30p.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Shelby
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church or to the donors choice and left in care of the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street in Shelby.
