Vincent A. Borgelt
Vincent A. Borgelt, age 86, of Crestline, died Thursday, February 14, 2008. He died at home after a long and courageous battle with leukemia.
Vince was born September 29, 1921 in Glandorf, Ohio the son of the late Frederick and Veronica (Bockrath) Borgelt. He moved to this area in 1955, enjoying farming and retired from Copperweld in 1985 after 30 years of service.
Vince was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Bethlehem Shelby Settlement. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion.
After his retirement, Vince became a lay minister in the Church, holding Liturgy Of The Word and Communion services for the parish for 17 years. He also served at many retreats. Vince felt it was a privilege to do these things for people.
Vince was proud to have served his country during WWII in the Pacific in the 671st Topographic Engineer Company. They became a close knit unit holding a reunion every year since 1947. Vince loved nature. He was an avid gardener and walked many miles through woods listening to the sounds of birds and animals.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, LaVerne (Schumacher) Borgelt, whom he wed on August 26, 1946; 4 sons, Errol and Susan Borgelt of Pittsburgh, PA, Randy and Joan Borgelt of Shelby, Gary Borgelt of Crestline, Charles and Charlene Borgelt of Willard; 1 daughter, Ann and Otis Manar III of Birmingham, AL; 14 grandchildren, Andrew Borgelt of Pittsburgh, PA, Emily (Joseph) Carmody of Jenks, OK, Monica Romano of Montgomery, AL, Beth Manar of Athens, OH, Martha Manar, M.D. of Atlanta, GA, Tony Manar of Birmingham, AL, Gretchen (Maurice) Melton of Columbus, OH, Jessica (Aaron) Howard of Shelby, Jesse Borgelt and fiancée, Charlene Joseph of Mansfield, Jennifer Borgelt of Willard, Ashley Borgelt and fiancé, Justin Billotte of Mansfield, Laura (Aaron) Blevens of Mansfield, Miranda Borgelt and Ben Borgelt both of Willard. 8 great grandchildren, Colton, Kalib, and Victoria Hord of Bucyrus, Jacob, Isaac, and Joshua Howard of Shelby, Isobel Manar Fike of Athens and Owen Joseph Carmody of OK; a sister-in-law, Betty Borgelt of Shelby and a cousin, Arnold (Teresa) Borgelt of Ottawa, OH. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, Michael Vincent Borgelt, 2 sisters, Sister Gabriel OP and Rita Heavin, 2 brothers, Gilbert and Jim Borgelt.
Friends may call on Sunday, February 17, 2008 from 2-5 PM at the Turner Funeral Home,
168 West Main Street, Shelby and also on Monday, February 18, 2008 at the funeral home from 9:30-10:30 AM. The Daughters of Isabella will recite the rosary on Sunday at 4:45 PM and a Christian wake service will be conducted Sunday at 5 PM at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 11 AM at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Bethlehem, Shelby Settlement with Father Nick Cunningham officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail.
