Stephen John Korbas
Stephen John Korbas, age 86, of Shelby, died Sunday, November 11, 2012 at Olentangy Woods Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Galion.
He was born June 6, 1926 in Shelby, the son of the late John and Mary Korbas. He was a 1944 graduate of Shelby High School and was an Army veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific Theater. He retired from Miami Systems after 40 years of service. Steve was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church and Shelby American Legion. Two of Steve’s proudest experiences were his trip with his wife and daughter, Ann, to his parents’ homeland of Slovakia where he met many relatives for the first time and his trip to Washington, DC to see the World War II Memorial dedication ceremony. He was an avid railroad lantern and lock and key collector for 40 years.
Steve deeply treasured his family and will be lovingly remembered and missed by: his wife: Gaylee (Dick) Korbas, whom he wed on May 22, 1948; 3 children: Ann (James) Mulder of Chesapeake Beach, MD, Julie (David) Noggle of Galion, and Greg Korbas of Shelby, 2 grandsons: Michael Noggle of Columbus and Stephen Noggle of Galion; 5 brothers: Joseph Korbas (Marilyn Stephenson) of Niles, OH, Rudolph Rudy (Marilyn) Korbas of Shelby, Thomas (Judy) Korbas of Indianapolis, IN James Peachie (Ann) Korbas of Mesa, AZ, Michael (Patty) Korbas of Shelby; a sister: Theresa Tash of Plymouth. He was preceded in death by a brother: Paul Korbas and a sister: Marianne Korbas.
Friends may call on Friday, November 16, 2012 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby where a Christian wake service will be conducted at 7:30 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:30 AM at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Father Nick Cunningham officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail with burial be in the parish cemetery. Memorial expressions may be made to the church.
