Ruth Marian (Fenner) Underhill
Ruth Marian (Fenner) Underhill, age 85, of 8 North Long Street, Shelby, died Monday April 26, 1999 at the Crestwood Care Center after a year-long battle with congestive heart failure.
She was born November 29, 1913 on the family farm in Plymouth, the daughter of Frank C. and Ida (Hutchinson) Fenner. She was a 1930 graduate of Plymouth High School and a 1933 graduate of The Ohio State University with a degree in education. Mrs. Underhill taught elementary school in Richland County for 36 years, the last 24 years in the Shelby City Schools, retiring in 1977.
She was a life long Lutheran and was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Shelby, the Business and Professional Women in Shelby, and various professional teaching organizations.
“Nonie” as she was known by her family, is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Louise and Jim Hunter of Shelby; 3 granddaughters: Jennifer Hunter, Wendy Hunter and Jaime Hunter all of Shelby; beloved great-grandson, Jared Hunter of Shelby; a brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Donna Fenner of Columbus; step daughter and her spouse, Doris Jean and Allen Brown of Sacramento, California; 4 step grandchildren; several step great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
On December 27, 1941, she married Howard Dwight Underhill, and he died on August 6, 1958. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Frank C. Fenner; 2 sisters: Doris Fenner Flythe and Lucille Fenner Swank.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 7:00 P.M. at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Shelby with Rev. D. Evan Houk and Rev. June Fryman officiating. The family will greet friends one half hour prior to the service in the church parlor. Memorial expressions may be made to the church. Turner Funeral Home in Shelby is in charge of arrangements.
