Ruth Emily (Leonhard) Hopkins
Ruth Emily (Leonhard) Hopkins, age 93, of Goleta, CA, died peacefully on March 9, 2003, at the home of her son, in the presence of family, in Shelby, Ohio. Born July 26, 1909, in Rahway, NJ, to Cezar Alfonso Leonhard and Lillian Katherine (Wiley) Leonhard.
She was a registered nurse, graduating from nurses training at St. Luke’s Hospital in New York City in 1929. She married Marshall Booker Hopkins April 7, 1938; they moved to Shelby in 1956. She worked part-time at Shelby Memorial Hospital, from which she retired in 1978. She and her husband retired to Goleta, CA, in 1984. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Shelby.
Mrs. Hopkins is survived by son and daughter-in-law Carl and Susan Hopkins of Santa Barbara, CA; son Lanny Hopkins of Shelby; grandchildren Andrew and Jodi Hopkins, Heather and Craig Baker, Heidi Hopkins, Katherine Hopkins, Robert Kish and Nikki Kish; great granddaughters Morgan Baker and Madeline Baker; great grandson Andrew Charles Marshall Hopkins; sister-in- law, Anne Pleasants Ayers of Staunton, VA; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death in 2000 by her husband of 62 years, Marshall Booker Hopkins. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her brother Robert Leonhard, her sister Mae Kubu,
and an infant son, Marshall, Jr. Her ashes will be interred at the family burial ground in Charles Town, WV. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Shelby, or to MedCentral Hospice. The Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, assisted the family with funeral arrangements.
