Ruth Amy (Stroup) Wendland Rader
Ruth Amy Stroup Rader, age 96, formerly of 116 Rogers Lane, Shelby, died early Wednesday, March 13, 2002 at the Heritage Care Center.
She was born January 8,1906 in Plymouth Township, Richland County, Ohio, the daughter of the late Harry B. and Nora (Moore) Stroup. Mrs. Rader was a 1923 graduate of Shelby High School. She taught one year at Kuhn School, Plymouth, Township (1926-1927). She received a BS in education from Heidelberg College in Tiffin in 1928 and MA in education from Columbia University in New York in 1942. Mrs. Rader taught for 14 years in the Bellefontaine School System (1928-1942) and retired from the Shelby City School System (1942-1964) after 22 years of service. After her retirement, she was a nanny to Sarah and Kyle Depler and she considered those 12 years to be the best years of her life.
She was an active member of First United Methodist Church, a member of Shelby Retired School Employees Group, Richland County Retired Teachers Association, Ohio Education Association, National Education Association, was a 55-year member of the Hazel Grove Grange, and was an avid quilter.
She married Robert Wendland in December 1974 and he died in December of 1977. She then married Willis Rader in June 1980 and he died in December of 1994.
She is survived by a step-son, Marvin and Florence Rader of Niles, Ohio; 2 step-daughters: Elvetta Ragase of Marysville, Ohio, and Darlene Hartz of Shelby; 5 step-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will not be observed. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10AM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, with Rev. Carl Beighley, officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Plymouth. Memorial expressions may be made to the First United Methodist Church or to the Shelby Education Association Scholarship Fund.
