Rolla C. Worthington
Rolla C. Worthington, age 97, of Shelby, died Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky.
He was born July 15, 1913 in Edgerton, OH the son of the late Otis and Zula B. (Viers) Worthington. Mr. Worthington was a 1932 graduate of Shelby High School and was an Army veteran of WWII serving in the 305th Infantry, 77th Division in Okinawa, Leyte, and Guam from 1942-1945. He was a Purple Heart recipient. He was an employee of Shelby Cycle and worked for the GSA at Wilkins Air Force Depot for 29 years. He also painted on the side. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Shelby American Legion and Shelby VFW. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and traveling.
Rolla is survived by his wife: Mary (Baker) Worthington, whom he wed on December 24, 1949; 2 daughters: Gloria (Gregg) Franklin of Shelby and Sandra Ankney of Celina, OH; 2 grandsons: Darren Ankney of Celina and Scott Franklin of Shelby; a great grandson: Bryce Ankney.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers: Harley and his twin Rollin Worthington, 4 sisters: Dorothy Roth, Zula Belle Ross, Mary Viers, and Helen Worthington.
Friends may call on Thursday, February 17, 2011 from 6-8 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby where funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:30 AM conducted by Rev. Tom Snyder. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail.
