Robert R. Underhill

Robert R. Underhill, age 75, of 50 Marvin Avenue, Shelby, died Thursday evening at his home due to colon cancer.

Mr. Underhill was born October 20, 1919 in Shelby, Ohio the son of Edward and Nina (Brown) Underhill. He was a retired 42-year employee of Shelby-Copperweld where he was Manager of Purchasing, retiring August 31, 1983.

A World War II veteran of the 438th Troop Carrier Group, 89th Squadron, he served in the European Campaign and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant, October 11, 1945.

Mr. Underhill was a former member of the Shelby Chamber of Commerce, Purchasing Association of North Center Ohio, Past Commander of the Shelby V.F.W. George Broderick Post #291, member of the American Legion O’Brien Post #326, and had many appearances with the Shelby Minstrel Association in the early 1950’s. He was an avid golfer and bowler for many years, and had been a member of the Shelby Country Club. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, in Shelby. He was a graduate of Shelby High School.

He is survived by his wife, former Ashland resident, Eileen (Berry) Underhill, whom he married on December 24, 1942; one daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Don Koppler of Lexington, Ohio and one granddaughter and her husband, Kelley and Ryan Foster, of Circleville, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Turner Funeral Home in Shelby where funeral services will be held on Monday at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. Jack L. Sersig, visitation pastor at First Lutheran Church, officiating . Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Shelby where military graveside services will be conducted by the Shelby V.F.W..
