Penwell Turner Funeral Home - Shelby, Ohio

Phillip Lloyd Ragland

Phillip Lloyd Ragland was a special gift given to Herbert L. and Sondra A. Ragland on May 6, 1969. He went home to be with the Lord unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at his home in Lexington.

Phillip accepted Christ at the early age of 8 through Trinity Baptist Church’s AWANA ministry and was baptized by Pastor Gene Milioni of Trinity Baptist Church in Findlay, OH.

He attended public schools in Ohio and Michigan, having graduated from Harbor Springs High School in 1987. He then attended Grand Valley University, Davenport College, and Northern Michigan College.

Phillip married Melissa Delamater and they later divorced. On December 12, 2008 he married Lisa (Betts) Ragland, of Lexington, and she survives.

Throughout his career, he worked for Shoe Corporation of America, Meijers Department Stores Inc., Marathon Petroleum Co., and was presently employed at Dana Corporation.

Phillip loved life and people. He was a gifted musician whose hobbies included rifle hunting, bow hunting, and most spectator sports such as football, basketball, golf, and baseball.

His most endearing quality was his love for the Lord as he enjoyed witnessing for Christ.

He was preceded in death by grandparents: Percy and Lucille Ragland, Walter and Lillian Banks; uncles and aunts: Lawrence and Roberta Ragland, Harold and Dorothy Palmer, Thelma Barnes, Donald Young, and William Zimmerman; cousins: Charles and Barbara Crutcher.

Phillip also leaves behind Lisa’s children: Rebecca McMillen, Devon McMillen, Sara Jones, Erin Jones; 3 grandchildren; a sister: Lisa (Jeffery) Ward, of Findlay; a brother: Charles Ragland, of Mansfield; uncles and aunts: Percy Ragland, Harold (Lucille) Ragland, Juanita Zimmerman, Mildred Young, Welma Sutton; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

Ecclesiastes 3: 1-2: To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die, a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

Friends may call on Sunday, January 29, 2012 from 3-6 pm and also on Monday from 10-11 am at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where funeral services will be at 11 am. His father, Herbert L. Ragland, will officiate and burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery in Shelby. My heart was heavy after hearing of the loss of such a wonderful man. Phil was more than just a high school student. He was a one-teen-diversification for our era. Phil worked hard to fit in but I realized it went both ways. I later moved to Cincinnati and realized how much Phil had taught me about differences and how valuable they are. He was a good man and will be missed. His lessons, however, will ripple on and on.

I am so sorry for your loss. I worked with Lisa and was able to meet Phil a handful of times. There are no words to comfort anyone in a time like this, but I would like to leave with you this:

Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.

    Sondra and Herb,
You are in our prayers. May you feel God’s wonderful arms of comfort around each of you. Psalms 139:16-17 You saw me before I was born. Everyday of my life was recorded in Your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. How precious are Your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered.

    Lisa,
I am so sorry for your loss. Before I retired I worked at the Employment Connection in Ashland and I really enjoyed seeing you both come in and job search. Phil’s humor was the highlight of the visit.

My father went home to be with the Lord a week ago so I know what a loss you are feeling right now but they are in a better place now. I know this doesn’t help right now but hopefully it will one day soon.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
